Brit workers are more miserable than those in India and the Philippines. A new study has revealed UK staff are more anxious about their work than those in the US, South Africa and Kenya.
They are also less happy than employees in the United Arab Emirates as well as the Philippines and India, the global survey of 70,000 staff by WorkL found.
Britain even scored below the global average when staff were asked to rank their workplace wellbeing. Former Waitrose boss Lord Price, who founded WorkL, said this is affecting productivity which has plunged in the past five years.
He said: “We know from extensive research that happier employees are more productive than their unhappy counterparts. They give extra discretionary effort and have few sick days.”
He reckons a happier workforce is a “strategic imperative for the UK economy” and would improve Britain’s output.
Figures from independent think tank, the Resolution Foundation, have revealed that the UK’s productivity slumped by 0.5% between 2019 and 2024.
Meanwhile in the US, productivity has jumped by 9.1% over the same period. Chancellor Rachel Reeves said Britain’s productivity problem “directly affects every working family in Britain who feel they are squeezing every penny to make ends meet”.
She has pledged to use her autumn budget to address the issue.
