The man was pulled from the sea unconscious after swimming off Lindos, Rhode’s historic tourist capital on August 16 – emergency responders rushed to the scene but he couldn’t be saved
A 26-year-old British man has died in Rhodes, with his body recovered from the sea. The man was dragged from the water unconscious after taking a dip off Lindos, Rhodes’ historic tourist hotspot on August 16.
The island’s port authority confirmed it was aware of an incident involving a young foreigner being retrieved from the sea. Emergency crews raced to the scene but he couldn’t be rescued and was declared dead. His death was subsequently confirmed by doctors at the nearby Archangelos Health Centre. Local police are probing the circumstances surrounding the incident, with a post-mortem ordered by the Forensic Medical Service.
In a statement, the UK Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities”, reports the Mirror.
It follows a tragedy where a 78-year-old British woman was discovered dead in a hotel pool in Crete. Three people were arrested on suspicion of negligent manslaughter, including a 21-year-old lifeguard.
The pensioner was taking a dip in her hotel pool in Hersonissos when she became unwell. She was hauled from the water and given first aid, but paramedics were unable to save her.
She was declared dead at hospital. Along with the young lifeguard, two hotel managers – aged 51 and 41 – were also taken into custody. According to local media, all three of the suspects have been released on bail.
A fortnight ago, also in Greece, a “beloved” British grandfather tragically perished on holiday following a freak accident.
Craig Bloomer, 54, had journeyed to the picturesque Greek island of Corfu for a family getaway with his two daughters, their partners and grandchildren, but tragically passed away following a moped accident on July 26.
The “much-loved” grandfather, from Wolverhampton, had been experiencing his “happiest” moments on this trip since losing his wife Jane, 53, to cancer two years prior, his daughter revealed.
The 54-year-old met his tragic end after losing control of his moped and crashing close to the village of Agios Mattheos.
In a separate tragedy, a British man tragically died on a cruise ship after being found lifeless in a swimming pool while the vessel was docked in Naples earlier this month.
The 83-year-old Scottish holidaymaker, whose identity has not been disclosed, was discovered in the Marella Voyager’s pool on Tuesday, August 19.
Despite efforts by fellow holidaymakers and crew members to resuscitate him, the man was declared dead at the scene. Italian officials boarded the ship, briefly detaining it whilst conducting their investigation.
