EXCLUSIVE: United States President Donald Trump could hand the Donbass region to Russia, and the long-term consequences of that could be far worse than many would imagine
An ominous warning has been issued about the future of Ukraine – Putin ‘will be back’ for more. As Ukraine’s leader Volodymr Zelenskyy meets with US President Donald Trump in the United States, with several European leaders also joining the meeting, the realisation of a peace deal between Russian and Ukraine has never been closer.
Despite Russian leader Vladimir Putin launching the invasion in 2022, and a previous on the Donbass region in 2014, it could be that Putin will finally get to keep the one major piece of Ukraine he’s been fighting for for more than a decade.
The Donbass region is, in the eyes of many, could be given to Russia for good, which includes the much-talked-about Donbass Arena – the former home of Ukraine’s most famous football club, Shakhtar Donetsk.
The area is near the border with Russia – specifically Rostov-on-Don – and has long been seen as a key priority of Putin’s.
However, world-leading defence expert Professor Anthony Glees has issued a sobering warning that a peace deal might not actually be the end of this.
He told the Daily Star: “The vile Russian dictator has always wanted all of Ukraine by hook or by crook, he will never quit the lands he has stolen, never return the Ukrainian kids he has kidnapped to Russia. He will never stand trial for the war criminal he undoubtedly is.
“Both men (Putin and Trump) are land grabbers, both men obsessed with power and wealth. At Anchorage, Trump bigged up little Putin (though Trump’s jet and red carpet were larger).
“Trump says they were both on the same side during the ‘Russia hoax’ and they’re on the same side now.
“Putin will sign a deal which allows him to keep what he’s seized and promise to behave in the future – as he did when he agreed to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty in return for their giving up their nukes in the Budapest deal of 1994.
“He then proceeded to annexe Crimea in 2014 and again promised foolish Frau Merkel in the Minsk deal of 2015 that he’d behave better in future.
“Trump will give Putin the Donbass today and Putin will come back for the rest of Ukraine in the years to come, either by force or by subversion and probably both.”
The meeting between Trump, Zelenskyy and other leaders will take place later today, with the potential Donbass deal said to be taken from him during the conversation.
