Napoli are reportedly considering a move for Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund as they look to bolster their attacking options following Romelu Lukaku’s injury
Napoli are reportedly eyeing up a move for Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund as Romelu Lukaku faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury.
The ex-United forward suffered a torn quad muscle in their final pre-season friendly before the start of the Serie A season. Napoli have confirmed that Lukaku will undergo a surgical consultation after commencing his rehabilitation programme.
Lorenzo Lucca, who signed earlier this summer, will step in for the Belgian international. However, following the loan of Giovanni Simeone to Torino and Galatasaray re-signing Victor Osimhen, Lucca is now their only recognised centre-forward. As such, Antonio Conte is reportedly keen to bring in another option to aid their title defence this season.
According to The Guardian, Napoli are contemplating a move for Hojlund, having kept tabs on the Danish international. The report suggests that while Conte is a fan of Hojlund, his club would prefer a loan deal rather than the permanent transfer United are seeking.
Milan are also said to be interested in the striker, a team Hojlund would be willing to join. However, they too are looking for a loan deal, with United valuing the striker at around £30million, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Atalanta, another Italian club, are also reportedly monitoring the situation surrounding their former player.
After unexpectedly selling Mateo Retegui to Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah this summer, they are in need of a new striker.
A move to Napoli would see Hojlund reunite with former United teammate Scott McTominay. The pair played together 34 times in the 2023/24 season, with McTominay setting up Hojlund for the opening goal in a 4-3 loss to Copenhagen in the Champions League group stages.
Hojlund will be hoping for a similar resurgence in Serie A as his midfield counterpart. Last season, McTominay netted 12 goals and provided six assists, helping Napoli clinch the title.
He was subsequently named the league’s most valuable player and has been recognised for his exceptional performances. McTominay has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or less than 12 months after his Old Trafford exit.
The United graduate was allowed to leave his boyhood club in a £25million move last summer, joining Napoli.
And it was a decision that spectacularly backfired, as the Red Devils slumped to 15th in their worst ever Premier League season, while the Scot has transformed his career and the Naples club as he helped power Napoli to the Scudetto, winning the Serie A Player of the Season in the process.
