David de Gea has been linked with a stunning return transfer to Manchester United, and the Spaniard only recently shared his hope for his former club’s season
David de Gea has been shockingly linked with a comeback transfer to Manchester United, two years after his departure from the club.
United are reportedly conducting “checks” on the Spanish goalkeeper, who is said to be available for a modest fee from Fiorentina. This has allegedly piqued the interest of Old Trafford bosses, who may consider a reunion amidst issues in their goalkeeping ranks.
Ruben Amorim’s first-choice keeper, Andre Onana, missed pre-season due to a hamstring injury but was fit for Sunday’s Premier League opener against Arsenal. However, he was overlooked in favour of Altay Bayindir.
The Turkish shot-stopper was outmuscled by William Saliba, resulting in a weak one-handed punch to a first-half Gunners corner, which allowed Riccardo Calafiori to score the game’s only goal.
Strengthening the goalkeeping position hasn’t been a priority for United, but they are now being linked with this astonishing switch if De Gea were to return, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The 34 year old was adored by fans for his contributions over his 12-year stint at the club. He was part of the last United squad to win the Premier League and bagged a further eight trophies.
De Gea recently expressed his sentiments and hopes for his former club this season.
Following the friendly match between United and Fiorentina at Old Trafford on Saturday, August 10, De Gea voiced his support for them to reclaim their rightful place in English football.
De Gea told Sky Sports News: “I know it’s been some years at United where they have struggled a bit, but this is one of the best clubs in the world.
“It’s a massive club. Hopefully this year with the signings and the manager starting a new era, they can do something big.
“Let’s see, hopefully they can win something and be there where they deserve.”
Whether De Gea would fancy a return to potentially add to his 545 United appearances remains unclear, though reports suggest he’d be receptive to any role Amorim might propose.
Likewise, United would apparently be able to facilitate his comeback if a deal proved affordable enough.
De Gea left Manchester United with a whimper in the summer of 2023 – he couldn’t find a club for 12 months, before signing on the dotted line under the Tuscan sun. After guiding Fiorentina to sixth place last term and securing Conference League qualification, De Gea penned a fresh deal lasting until 2028.
