The 26-year-old prison officer sent flirty letters and had phone sex with the apparently ‘dangerous’ inmate, and reportedly supplied him contraband while he was on the inside,
A 26-year-old prison officer at HM Prison Wealstun in West Yorkshire has admitted to engage in a scandalous relationship with an apparently dangerous inmate, it has been claimed. Megann Gibson, who worked at the Category C facility which houses around 900 prisoners, was involved in an inappropriate fling that included phone sex and explicit love letters.
The unnamed prisoner, who reportedly has ties to an organised crime group, was granted access to restricted areas of the jail by Gibson, who also visited him at his resettlement accommodation. The illicit affair came to light after Gibson’s actions triggered 102 anti-corruption intelligence reports in just five months of employment, which is about one every working day.
Leeds Crown Court heard that the relationship involved “sexual communications via telephone” and “highly suggestive” letters. In one note, the inmate thanked Gibson for a vape and described how he loved snogging the 26-year-old guard.
Interestingly, Prosecutor Louise Pryke noted that while the letters strongly suggested physical intimacy, the prosecution could not definitively confirm it. Incredibly, Gibson also sent over 900 messages to the prisoner’s mother, apparently to maintain contact with him.
Gibson pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office as well as to possession of cannabis. Following her arrest, police discovered £1,000 in cash, which she claimed was withdrawn to pay for a tattoo. However, bank records contradicted her story, raising further suspicions.
There were also suggestions that Gibson may have met with members of the prisoner’s organised crime group, though details remain unclear.
The court was set to sentence Gibson, but the hearing was adjourned until November to determine the basis for her punishment. A prison term seems likely given the severity of her actions.
Judge Kate Rayfield highlighted the extraordinary frequency of the anti-corruption reports, underscoring the extent of Gibson’s misconduct at Wealstun, a facility focused on rehabilitation through training courses for inmates.
The case has raised concerns about oversight within the prison system, as Gibson’s behaviour went undetected for months despite the red flags.
Her actions not only breached professional boundaries but also posed potential security risks due to the inmate’s criminal connections. As the November hearing approaches, the court will decide the consequences for Gibson’s betrayal of trust in her role as a public officer.
The scandal echoes the notorious actions of Linda De Sousa Abreu, a former HMP Wandsworth prison officer who made headlines in June 2024 after being filmed engaging in sexual activity with inmate Linton Weirich inside a cell.
The explicit video, recorded by another prisoner using a smuggled phone, went viral, exposing De Sousa Abreu’s illicit encounters and sparking widespread outrage.
She pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office, admitting to multiple sexual acts with Weirich, and was sentenced to 15 months in January 2025, though she was released after five months.
