Pensioner Wasim, 80, was bathing in a river near his home in Indonesia when a 10ft reptile pounced and below we look at other animal attacks that were caught on camera
It’s been six weeks since a grandfather was brutally eaten alive by a crocodile. Pensioner Wasim, 80, was washing in a river close to his home in Tanggamus Regency in Lampung Province, Sumatra, Indonesia, on June 30, when a 10ft beast struck. The crocodile hauled him beneath the surface and panic set in when his clothing was spotted on the riverbank.
Worried villagers began searching for the elderly man before witnessing the crocodile gripping the terrified gentleman in its jaws, his body being carried through the water.
Following strikes with sticks, the animal eventually released its grip, but a local police chief tragically confirmed: “The victim was found within an hour or at 13.00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), after the crocodile emerged carrying him in its mouth. After being struck several times, the crocodile finally released the victim’s body. But when recovered, he was already in a lifeless state.”
The victim’s son-in-law, Samugi, remarked: “It was just a normal day for us. We didn’t expect it to end tragically like this.”
With this recent tragedy, below we examine other animal attacks filmed that ended in equally devastating outcomes.
Picture before tragedy
Charles Gibbs, 40, harboured an enormous passion for bears, and in April 1987, he embarked on a mission to snap the ideal photograph that would ultimately claim his life. He was wandering through Montana’s Glacier National Park when he captured shots of bears from afar.
Yet, when he took another snap, this time much nearer at merely 50 yards from the creatures, it revealed the female grizzly and her trio of cubs hurtling towards him in what became a chilling photograph.
In terror, Charles bolted down the mountainside and scrambled up a tree before the mother bear allegedly dragged him back down. He suffered bites and claw marks, and though he briefly escaped, the bear attacked once more and fatally mauled him.
He was trekking Elk Mountain alongside his wife Glenda when the horrific incident occurred.
Following the discovery of his remains, assistant park superintendent Alan O’Neill remarked that Charles “knew what he was getting into” and noted: “The human in this case was the intruder.”
Charles was carrying a firearm when he died, though his wife insisted he wouldn’t have used it against the bear.
Tiger fixation
Maqsood Khan, 22, harboured an “obsession with tigers” and after scaling into a white tiger’s enclosure at New Delhi Zoo in 2014, he predictably faced a tragic fate.
Once inside, he caught the attention of Vijay, an endangered tiger, while appalled spectators recorded the terrifying scenes that followed.
Maqsood was grabbed by the throat and hauled back to the animal’s den where the young man’s doom was inevitable. A witness described hearing terrifying screams before discovering the man “writhing badly in pain” whilst trapped in the tiger’s jaws.
His mangled body wasn’t retrieved for two hours until the tiger was finally lured into a small enclosure.
Officials later held Maqsood responsible for the “misadventure”, claiming he had disregarded safety warnings before entering the tiger’s habitat.
Safari carnage
Two years following the incident above, another deadly big cat attack unfolded, this time at Beijing’s Badaline Wildlife Park.
Chinese woman Mrs Zhao stepped out of her vehicle to save her daughter, Mei, who had come face-to-face with a Siberian tiger after breaking park regulations by exiting the car following a family row.
Mei was hauled into the bushes by the predator as her mother dashed out to assist. The horrifying sequence was recorded on spine-chilling CCTV footage.
Her mother and husband were spotted racing to intervene when a second tiger struck. Mrs Zhao suffered a brutal fate at the claws of the tiger hiding in the vicinity.
The safari park was temporarily closed for inquiry but reopened after being cleared of wrongdoing, despite the bereaved family pursuing court action.
Spine-tingling recording
A pair who frequently appeared in now eerie photographs alongside bears had their final terrifying moments preserved on audio.
Timothy Treadwell, who dubbed himself ‘Grizzle Man’, and Amie Huguenard were in Alaska’s wilderness in October 2003 when they were devoured by a bear. Grizzle Man unknowingly captured his final moments on video, with his desperate cries of “Get out! I’m getting killed out here!” echoing chillingly.
He had spent 13 summers cohabiting with wild brown bears in Alaska. In the eerie footage, his terrified girlfriend can be heard yelling “play dead” as she emerged from their tent to aid him.
The bear momentarily released him, only to drag him away again, while Timothy implored her to “hit the bear”.
His partner resorted to using a frying pan, and her blood-curdling screams were the last sounds recorded before the camera abruptly cut off. The couple were tragically consumed by the bear, with Timothy’s head discovered nearby.
When the bear was later shot dead, four bin bags filled with human remains were found in its stomach.
