Police in Auckland were left horrified after the man was found to be smuggling one of the precious eggs, but had to wait until it had passed through his system before seizing it
A thief who swallowed a James Bond-inspired Fabergé egg has pooed out his loot in police custody. It comes after one man had tried to smuggle in the priceless object by swallowing it, trying to sneak it past officers.
Cops were placed on poo patrol after the 32-year-old suspect was seized at Partridge Jewellers in central Auckland after eating the £14,600 Octupussy-themed diamond-studded locket. His cunning plan to conceal it led him to be charged with theft.
After saying they were “waiting for nature to take its course” after his arrest, officers now say the egg has been “recovered” the natural way. They added that no “medical intervention” was required in order to retrieve the egg.
Cops said: “Given this man is in police custody, we have a duty of care to continue monitoring him given the circumstances of what has occurred.” The suspect is due to appear in court again on December 8.
According to charge sheets, he has also been charged with allegedly stealing an iPad from the same jewellery store on 12 November. He was also charged with making away with cat litter and flea control products worth about £45 from a private address a day after.
The news regarding the bizarre seizure first broke on Wednesday (December 3) when police in Auckland confirmed they had arrested a 32-year-old man. The unnamed suspect was arrested on suspicion of swallowing a James Bond-inspired Fabergé egg and were having to wait until the egg was ready to come out before they could seize it.
Officers had been called to Partridge Jewellers in New Zealand’s biggest city last Friday (November 28) after he was accused of ingesting his loot after the shop he was attempting to steal from had been shut down.
Police arrived at the scene within a matter of minutes and arrested the man as soon as they arrived. According to reports from the time, the man was put into custody and ordered to have a medical assessment to determine his condition after swallowing the pendant.
Speaking after his arrest, Inspector Grae Anderson, who had been leading the investigation, said: “At the time of his arrest he underwent a medical assessment, and an officer is assigned to constantly monitor the man. At this stage, the pendant has not been recovered.
Anderson added that the man had to remain in custody and could only be dealt with after the egg had passed through his system. The egg is adorned with dozens of jewels, including diamonds, sapphires, before opening to reveal a golden octopus.
The whimsical object had been inspired by the 1983 Bond classic Octopussy, which itself is based around the theft of a Fabergé egg. In its description on the shop’s website, it says: “The octopus surprise pays homage to the eponymous antagonist at the centre of the Octopussy film.”
