Millions of Cloudflare users across the world are likely to see a ‘ 500 internet server error’ message when they log onto a number of websites impacted by the issue
Cloudflare has crashed, causing a ripple effect that’s brought down numerous websites worldwide. X, Substack and Canva are among the casualties of the massive internet blackout.
As a result of the outage, millions of users across the world are likely to see a ‘ 500 internet server error’ message when they log onto websites impacted by the issue. Cloudflare said in a statement: “Cloudflare is investigating issues with Cloudflare Dashboard and related APIs.
“Customers using the Dashboard / Cloudflare APIs are impacted as requests might fail and/or errors may be displayed.”
This is the second outage in less than a month after the service faced disruption on November 18.
The previous outage left many websites offline for around three hours after another “internal service degradation”, which it said was due to an unusual spike in traffic to one of Cloudflare’s services.
Some of the companies involved in the previous outage appear to be less impacted by the current issues, indicating that they have perhaps taken steps since mid-November to make their services less reliant.
Although many will be unfamiliar with Cloudflare, the system is estimated to provide services to one in five of the world’s websites.
The cloud service operator is similar to other brands such as Amazon’s AWS and Microsoft’s Azure.
CEO Matthew Prince had vowed to learn from the previous outage a little over a fortnight ago, to ensure that it did not happen again.
He wrote following the November 18 outage as he attempted to explain the cause: ” This post is an in-depth recount of exactly what happened and what systems and processes failed.
“It is also the beginning, though not the end, of what we plan to do in order to make sure an outage like this will not happen again.”
