Robert Redford has died at the age of 89 after a glittering career, but he faced multiple heartbreaks in his life after two of his children died years before he died
Actor Robert Redford has died at the age of 89, it has been announced. While he will be remembered for an incredibly career, winning countless awards including two Oscars, he faced a number of heartbreaks during his life.
Robert was married twice during his life, leaving behind wife Sibylle Szaggars at the time of his death. However he was married to activist Lola Van Wagenen first from 1958. It’s not clear when they divorced, but in 1982 it was reported they had been separated for “a number of years”.
During their time together, they had four children – two sons and two daughters.
Tragically, their first born, Scott Anthony Redford, died in November 1959, just two-and-a-half months after his birth.
Scott sadly died of sudden infant death syndrome.
He has buried at Provo City Cemetery in Provo, Utah, which is where Robert lived.
The former couple welcomed daughter Shauna Jean Redford in November 1960.
Shauna doesn’t live in the public eye and is a painter. She is married to journalist Eric Schlosser.
Robert and Lola’s second Son David James Redford, known as James, was a writer and producer, who also made a number of documentaries.
He tragically died in October 2020 at the age of 58 from cancer of the bile ducts.
Robert and Lola’s youngest child, Amy Hart Redford, is an actress and filmmaker like her father.
She has appeared in movies including Maid in Manhattan, The Understudy and This Revolution, and on television shows such as Sex and the City, The Sopranos and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
Robert’s was a grandfather-of-seven at the time of his death.
He died in his sleep at his Provo home, as confirmed by his publicist, though a cause of death was not provided.
