With the US President, 79, set to touch down in the UK this week for his state visit, it’s likely he’ll have to refuse the lavish drinks served up at the Windsor Castle banquet
Donald Trump has revealed the real reason he doesn’t drink ahead of a state banquet with the Royal Family where he’ll probably just drink Diet Coke. Despite the US President’s reputation for flamboyance in other areas of his life, the 79-year-old doesn’t drink at all which may come as a surprise.
With Trump’s state visit to the UK fast approaching, it is likely the MAGA leader may have to swerve some cocktails at the banquet set to be held at Windsor Castle later this week.
Speaking on the campaign trail last year, the Republican revealed the reason why he doesn’t touch booze. Addressing the National Faith Advisory Board on October 28, Trump explained how his brother Freddy tragically died in 1981 at age 43, after being an alcoholic.
Trump said: “I had a brother who was a great guy, but he had an alcohol problem. It’s a hard problem to cure and I’ve never had a glass because of him.”
He added: “I think I have the type of personality where I probably would have a problem.”
Let everyone else get sloppy, while he’s seen as the man “keeping it together”, the subtext goes.
Despite regaling journalists with tales of raunchy excess from the 1980s and 1990s, Trump has always claimed to have remained teetotal.
To what extent this is true however, is unclear. In 2019, Vice published an article having spoken to a woman named ‘Laraby’, who worked behind the bar at various Manhattan bars in the 1990s.
“I served him. And he drank at the bar,” she told the publication. Laraby noted he would exercise restraint, letting drinking pals like “John Casablancas” go crazy while “nursing his drink”.
“Even if they were there for hours, he would have three beers at the most,” she said.
Paulo Zampolli and founder of ID Models – the man who claimed to have introduced Melania Trump to the US President – backed up the “Trump doesn’t drink” narrative.
Speaking of one night at the Kit Kat club, Zampolli said: “You could see champagne and vodka on the table, but for sure Mr. Trump had only Diet Coke. That’s what he drinks since I’ve known him.”
Trump is set to touch down in the UK later this evening, and will be sitting down to a slap up feast in Windsor Castle.
Let’s just hope the caterers at the state banquet know about Trump’s preference for soft drinks, otherwise that orange face might turn a lighter shade of red.
