Liverpool are continuing to be linked with a move for Alexander Isak, with the Reds said to be ‘interested’ in the Newcastle forward
Liverpool are on the countdown with less than a week to go before they kick off their Premier League title defence. The Reds are set to welcome Bournemouth to Anfield this Friday, marking the start of their new top-tier season.
Arne Slot’s lads suffered a potential setback in their pre-season prep after a loss in the Community Shield. Liverpool managed a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium but were pipped to the post in a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat.
Off the pitch, Liverpool continue to be linked with a host of potential new recruits. The Reds have already welcomed seven fresh faces to their squad this summer, and there could be more on the horizon over the next three weeks.
However, there has been a fresh twist in Liverpool’s ongoing links to Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Telegraph reporter Luke Edwards has suggested that the Reds might still bag Isak, provided two conditions are met.
The first is that Newcastle manage to secure two top-notch forwards to fill Isak’s boots, and the second is for Liverpool to cough up £150 million.
However, the report reckons that both scenarios seem unlikely at this point.
Isak had stopped training with Newcastle in an attempt to force a move to Liverpool but returned after the bid from the reigning Premier League champions was turned down.
Speaking on the Whistleblowers podcast, Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope told Mark Clattenburg: “I have known Alexander Isak was unsettled for the best part of a year. This goes all the way back to last summer, when Isak wasn’t given the contract he thought he was owed.”
The forward was scheduled to have a one-on-one meeting with manager Eddie Howe, their first since the squad returned from their pre-season tour of Asia.
Liverpool are also reportedly eyeing up Brentford forward Yoane Wissa for a summer signing.
Wissa has been strongly associated with a transfer away from the Bees, with speculation suggesting he would join Newcastle if he were to depart the Gtech Community Stadium.
However, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has suggested that Liverpool have expressed “late interest” in signing Wissa. Despite this alleged interest, the report continues to state that Wissa will not be joining the Reds and is instead set to sign for Newcastle.
