Bernadette Delmotte, 60, died after she accidentally activated the electric window of her Fiat 500 in a freak accident
A woman has tragically died in a freak accident after becoming trapped in her car’s electric window.
Bernadette Delmotte, 60, was killed whilst trying to prevent her motor from rolling away after failing to engage the handbrake. Reports from her home town of Bissy-sur-Fley, France, revealed she poked her head through the window of the Fiat 500 to grab the handbrake, but is thought to have accidentally triggered the controls, trapping her neck between the window and the car’s frame.
Her relatives and pals, who became worried when she didn’t show up for a meal on June 13, initially suspected she might have been set upon by a “madman” attempting to nick her vehicle.
However, investigations revealed that her death was the outcome of a horrific mishap involving the car’s window. Her brother François told Franceinfo: “At first, even the police were confused.
“They were really asking, ‘What the hell happened?’ I didn’t understand it either. When they called me to tell me, I was confused, in denial.”, reports the Mirror.
“Overwhelmed with emotion, I told myself all sorts of things – that someone had attacked her, that she had died by suicide – and then, little by little, I understood.”
Meanwhile, her close mate Béatrice told France 3: “It seems the handbrake hadn’t been applied. The car then began to roll backwards. To stop it, Bernadette threw herself through the open window to stop it from going any further. But her hand moved over the window control, and by the time she straightened up, the window stopped on her neck.”
Back in 2021, a woman in Ukraine tragically lost her life in a comparable freak incident after becoming trapped by her neck in the window of her stationary BMW motor.
The mum-of-two, who had been marking her 21st birthday, was leaning out to reach her daughter through the partially-opened front seat window when the tot accidentally pressed the automatic window button, crushing her windpipe.
Her husband discovered her unconscious, and she passed away eight days later after suffering suffocation that led to brain damage.
Numerous contemporary vehicles are equipped with so-called ‘pinch protection’ systems designed to prevent harm from closing windows. These generally utilise sensors to identify when a window encounters resistance, activating an automatic anti-trap function.
