Ruben Amorim faces an uncertain future at Manchester United despite an upturn in form which has seen the Red Devils rise to 10th in the Premier League
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is expected to stay in charge for at least the next two weeks after securing a 2-0 victory against Sunderland.
Pressure was relieved at Old Trafford following a third consecutive home triumph, although speculation had suggested the embattled manager could still have faced the axe going into the international break. Now he will lead United on their trip to Anfield to face Premier League champions Liverpool on Sunday, October 19.
Summer recruit Benjamin Sesko netted one of United’s two goals on Saturday and has earned acclaim. Meanwhile, another former United player has expressed concern about the club’s “history disappearing”. There’s brighter news though, with reports suggesting the Red Devils are moving closer to agreeing a transfer.
Here’s all the latest news from Old Trafford.
The ‘crazy’ outcome that could have sealed Amorim’s fate
Following just two victories from his first six Premier League matches and an embarrassing Carabao Cup elimination at the hands of Grimsby, the heat has intensified on Amorim this campaign.
But Saturday’s success against Sunderland lifted the club to 10th in the standings and reduced some of that pressure as domestic football pauses for the next two weeks, reports the Mirror.
Nevertheless, it seems Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are monitoring the managerial circumstances closely. This comes after reporter Fabrizio Romano indicated that a loss to the in-form Sunderland outfit might have been sufficient to terminate Amorim’s reign if the margin had been severe enough.
Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Romano said: “What is happening is also that Man United won the game against Sunderland and closed all the speculation, at least for the next few weeks, for Ruben Amorim. So they head into the international break way more relaxed.
“The new goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, finally started and got a clean sheet – and so a very good start for Lammens and a very good result for Amorim. As I told you guys, Man United were not going to sack Amorim even if Man United were going to lose the game against Sunderland. Even in that case, he was not going to be fired.
“That was the plan of Man Utd unless completely crazy things happened, like losing, I don’t know, 3 or 4 or 5-0. But, for example, losing the game, I don’t know, 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, something like that, Amorim was not going to be fired.”
United legend criticises “disgraceful” international record
Apart from Marcus Rashford, there isn’t a single player currently on United’s roster selected for the latest England squad.
Even then, Rashford isn’t technically a United player given he’s excelling on loan at Barcelona and appears unlikely to ever return.
It was only last year United broke a 48-year streak when they failed to see a single player named in the October 2024 England squad.
This trend has continued under Amorim, much to the frustration of former United winger and six-cap England international Gordon Hill.
Reacting to Thomas Tuchel’s latest selection, he posted on X: “If what I was told is true, that there is not one Man Utd player in the England squad apart from Rashford who is not [at] Man Utd, it is absolutely disgraceful and tells me that my club’s history is disappearing. I hope not.”
Sesko making life easier for three United stars
It requires skill to spot skill, and amongst United’s greatest forwards throughout history, Wayne Rooney sits close to the summit. So it would have been an honour for Sesko to hear the Red Devils’ record goalscorer heap praise on him this weekend.
It was the Slovenian’s sharp instincts in the box that put United two goals ahead at home against Sunderland and secured all three points. Following Sesko’s latest performance, Rooney highlighted three teammates who particularly benefit from his attacking presence.
Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show, he said: I think he’s a handful, and I think he uses his body well, he challenges for balls. It makes it easier for [Bryan] Mbeumo, [Matheus] Cunha when he’s on, or Mount to make runs in behind him, so I think that’s clearly something they’ve worked on.
“Obviously getting another goal will help him so the win was massive for all the players and for the manager, and it was much-needed.”
Following his first Premier League strike in the recent loss at Brentford, Sesko has now found the net in consecutive matches. Supporters will be praying the international break doesn’t disrupt that promising form.
£44m signing “almost guaranteed” for 2026
In the latest instalment of ‘United players flourishing away from Old Trafford’, Rasmus Hojlund’s renaissance has continued apace at Napoli.
The Danish striker netted the winner in a 2-1 victory over Genoa on Sunday, taking his tally to four goals in six outings since joining Antonio Conte’s outfit on loan.
Given United have already secured a replacement in Sesko, it would probably make the most sense to offload Hojlund next year if they can achieve the right fee. Napoli will have first refusal on his signature after agreeing a £38.2million purchase price for next summer, having already paid out £5.2m for the season-long loan.
Romano has suggested the former Atalanta striker’s impressive start in Serie A this season is already winning over the decision-makers in Naples. Unless they withdraw from the obligatory deal like Chelsea did with Jadon Sancho’s case this past summer, it seems the £43.4m transfer will go ahead.
Romano said: “Apart from the obligation they trigger or not, Napoli want to keep the player. Napoli trust Rasmus Hojlund.
“Napoli see Hojlund as part of their long-term project, and so it’s a loan with a buy option that might become an obligation, but it’s seen by all parties involved in this deal as a future permanent transfer almost guaranteed.”
