Mere weeks after being loaned to Trabzonspor from Manchester United, it appears the Turkish side is hoping to make the move permanent
Turkish team Trabzonspor have reportedly hinted that they would love to sign Andre Onana permanently following his temporary loan to the club from Manchester United.
Although the initial loan came without an option or obligation to buy, the Manchester United goalie has impressed bosses in his first four games, with the side now hoping to secure him permanently.
According to The Sun, it isn’t Onana’s goal keeping alone that has impressed head coach Fatih Tekke, but also his leadership qualities and just how well he has settled into his new surroundings.
Despite the loan not including a buy out option, Trabzonspor have indicated that they would like to open discussions with Manchester United about the possibility of making the move permanent once the loan officially expires.
At the moment, the Turkish giants, who are currently second in the Turkish Super Lig, pay Onana a hefty £120,000 a week – more than his contract at Old Trafford, meaning negotiating personal terms is not expected to be an issue should the transfer go ahead.
However, whether United would be open to this remains to be seen, as they may wish to try and recoup some of the £47m they initially paid Inter Milan for his services back in 2023.
Since moving to Turkey earlier this year, Onana has been hard at work returning to his professional best, with only a small circle around him for the duration.
Initially, his wife flew with him to Turkey, but later made the decision to return to Manchester to be with their children – and while not having family at his side, may seem like a harsh sacrifice to make, the minimalist approach appears to be paying off given his renewed success on the pitch.
He recently reminded fans of his unique ball-playing ability with a superb 60-yard assist in the match against Gaziantep.
At the conclusion of last season, Onana ended things as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper, retaining his place in the Europa League final against Tottenham.
However, he later picked up an injury on his return to pre-season, something whichUnited bosses were said to be suitably unimpressed with. This meant his was forced to miss pre-season and was relegated to the bench, with manager Ruben Amorim seemingly preferring Altay Bayındır.
When he did return to the pitch, his performance was far from his usual best, when he completely misjudged a cross which led to a goal during the League Cup match against Grimsby Town.
It is understood that this performance even prompted the signing of Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens, with United having been previously reluctant to bring in another goalkeeper up until that point.
Since then, United and Onana reportedly mutually agreed that he could benefit from a year away from the Premier League at a club where he could play and train regularly.
