Paul Mosley, along with Mick and Mairead Philpott, was convicted of the manslaughter of six children after a blaze was deliberately started at a home in Allenton in 2012
Paul Mosley, the infamous Derby child killer convicted of the deaths of six young children, has died aged 58.
Mosley, along with the parents of the children – Mick and Mairead Philpott – deliberately started a fire at a house in Allenton on May 11, 2012. The blaze tragically took the lives of the kids, who were all sleeping upstairs.
His death has been reported by DerbyshireLive, who claim that a relative of the six young victims confirmed the news to the outlet. Following a seven-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court in 2013, Mosley and the Philpotts were convicted of six counts of manslaughter.
Each of them was responsible for the tragic killings in what is regarded as one of the UK’s darkest days this century.
The life-ending and horrific blaze was the idea of five of the children’s fathers, Mick Philpott, who enlisted his wife and friend Mosley to help him light the fire at the foot of the stairs at the home in Victory Road.
The plan was for him to rescue the children yet, despite the best efforts of neighbours and the emergency services to save them, six children died.
Jade Philpott, 10, and brothers John, nine, Jack, eight, Jesse, six, Jayden, five, lost their lives along with half-brother Duwayne, 13.
Sentencing the trio following the trial, Justice Mrs Kate Thirlwell KC said: “All three of you are responsible for the deliberate setting of that fire. All three of you are responsible for those deaths.
“I have not the slightest doubt that you, Michael Philpott, were the driving force behind this shockingly dangerous enterprise. You Mairead Philpott, the mother of all of those children and you, Paul Mosley, a family friend assisted him.
“It was a wicked and dangerous plan and you (Philpott) put it into effect with the assistance of your two codefendants.
“You poured petrol on the floor. Paul Mosley was responsible for removing the containers from your home.
“You (Philpott) set light to it and after a short while Mairead Philpott spoke to the emergency services, it became clear that there was no chance of a successful rescue and the children perished. You (Mosley) have young children of your own.
“You must have appreciated the appalling risk to which these six children were to be exposed when this fire was started in their home.
“And yet you were prepared to go along with the plan and to join in with it to please your then friend, Michael Philpott.
“I am quite sure that one of your tasks that night was to remove the petrol containers from the scene so that the attack would appear to have come from outside.
“You enjoyed the attention that you gained from your proximity to the fire. You boasted of being arrested and bailed for six counts of murder. You could not help telling people that this was a plan that had gone wrong.”
In 2021, Mosley was released partway through his sentence but recalled and then later released again in November 2023.
The judge jailed Philpott, now 69, for life while his wife, now 44, and Mosley were jailed for 17 years. While Mick remains in prison, Mairead was released in 2020 with a new identity.
