A young boy who designed a treasure hunt game at the iconic Butlin’s holiday resort in Skegness caused a stir after other guests saw what it was they were searching for
A young boy’s innocent treasure hunt at Butlin’s in Skegness sparked a wave of laughter earlier this month when one of the items in the game was mistaken for something rather risque. Ricky Roberts, the boy’s dad, took to the resort’s Facebook page to share a photo of the hunt, causing a stir among other guests.
Ricky posted: “Hi, we are arriving today and my lad wanted me to post this pic as he will be hiding these round the resort all week. He would love it if found you take a pic and post it. Thank you [sic].” The picture showed several rubber ducks, a few small aquatic-themed toys, and three blue packets that became the talk of the town. You can view the post here.
One Facebook user quipped: “I’m so sorry! I had to zoom in those lil packets looked like something else to start with! Lovely idea!” Indeed, many others confessed they initially mistook the items for condom packets.
Another admitted: “I had to zoom in, I thought it was something for the kids and something for the adults!” A third person joked: “I thought this was an advert to stop having kids!”
Meanwhile a fourth observer noted: “Yeah I doubt anyone is gonna let their kids pick them packets up, to be honest I think you know exactly what they look like.”
And a fifth member of the Facebook group chimed in: “So we all agree that we had to do a double take on that packet. Jokes aside, this is an adorable idea. Well done to this lad.”
Looking more closely, the blue tear-open packets featuring a heart design on the front turned out to be ‘mystery bags’.
Meanwhile, one holidaymaker revealed their daughter had managed to locate one of the ducks, though it seemed the condom-like mystery bags were hidden rather too effectively for other camp guests to discover.
Last month, Andrew Leivers, the new resort director at Butlin’s Skegness, set out his vision for the beloved Lincolnshire holiday spot.
He disclosed: “We have got new shows, we have got a new Stephen Mulhern show and some pantomimes, the gladiators, and a musical show called Iconic. It’s west-end level quality.”
Speaking to Lincs Live, Andrew emphasised that whilst most venues charge extra for activities, Butlin’s includes nearly everything in the price – from the Skypark and funfair to the swimming pool and all performances across different stages. He mentioned that a Chopstix restaurant “will be landing in the next couple of weeks” at the Skegness location.
Following recent worries about Butlin’s accommodation standards, he provided reassurance. Andrew explained: “We have also brought on some more contract cleaners to help us to deliver the best service possible.”
He continued: “We have been on a massive recruitment drive and we have a great thing called Team Member Plus.”
The company takes pride in being a major local employer throughout the year, currently employing approximately 1,200 staff members, which Andrew says represents “the highest number we have had for many years.”
