Rasmus Hojlund is reportedly on the brink of a transfer to Napoli, with Manchester United poised to make a significant loss on the striker. Hojlund was signed by United from Atalanta in 2023 for a hefty fee of around £72million.

However, his impact at Old Trafford has been underwhelming, netting just 26 goals in 95 appearances across all competitions. With United bolstering their attack this summer, Hojlund has been deemed surplus to requirements by Ruben Amorim.

Hojlund has been omitted from the squad for United’s first two Premier League matches this season, falling behind Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee in the pecking order.

According to Sky Sports Italy, Hojlund is nearing a move to Napoli on loan, with an option to buy that will become obligatory if certain conditions are met. The report suggests that an agreement with the player has been reached and there are ‘only a few details remaining to be finalised’.

The deal is valued at a total of €45m (£39m), which would mean a staggering £33m loss for the Red Devils. Napoli have been eager to secure a new striker since Romelu Lukaku sustained a thigh injury in pre-season, sidelining him for several months, reports the Mirror.

Hojlund is hoping to regain his form in Italy, having declared during United’s pre-season tour of the US that he was determined to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford. “I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens,” he stated.

“I’m still very young. I think people forget that sometimes. I’m only 22. Obviously, not every striker is scoring 100 goals at the age of 22 (like Erling Haaland ).

“But I’ve learned a lot, I think you can see in my game. I’m starting to develop and become even better in the basics. Now it’s just about for me to sharpen myself and I’ve done very well in the pre-season so far.

“Just focusing on continuing that. Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I’m more than ready.

“I’m feeling sharp, so I’m welcoming everything that comes. I think it’s good with competition and it only sharpens the team.”
