The M25 has been closed following an accident on the major traffic artery – this is a breaking news story and is being constantly updated by our reporters as the breaking news story develops
Traffic on the M25 has ground to a halt this morning following a lorry fire. Motorists are stuck between junction 25 A10 (Enfield) and junction 24 Stagg Hill (Potters Bar), after a lorry carrying hay bales burst into flames.
With queues reportedly stretching up to a mile, National Highways has urged drivers to remain patient as delays could reach up to one and a half hours, reports the Mirror. Drivers taking to the M25 this morning have been given a route to follow to sidestep the accident scene.
They have been told to follow the route marked with a hollow square symbol on local road signs. Highways England has also provided the following directions:
- Exit at J25 of the M25
- At the roundabout take the first exit on to the A10 southbound
- Continue on the A10 to the Great Cambridge Junction with the A406 North Circular
- Follow the A406 North Circular westbound to the junction with the A1
- Turn right on the A1 northbound
- Remain on the A1 northbound to J23 of the M25
- At the roundabout take the first exit to re-join the M25 anti-clockwise
Taking to X, National Highways have shared an update, warning drivers the delays will last 60 minutes. The post read: “UPDATE #M25 anti-clockwise between J25 #Enfield and J24 #PottersBar. #Hertfordshire TRAFFIC STOPPED Following a hay lorry which has caught fire.
“@HFRS and @LondonFire have units on scene. @MPSRTPC also on scene. 60 min delay, 7 miles of congestion.”
A spokesperson for the organisation said: “The M25 anti-clockwise in Hertfordshire is closed between J25 Waltham Cross Interchange (Enfield, Hertford A10) and J24 Potters Bar Interchange (Potters Bar, A111).
“This is due to a multi-vehicle collision. Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, East of England Ambulance Service and National Highways Traffic Officers are attending.
“Traffic within the closure is being released past the scene.”
