US President Donald Trump has joked that he is “not sure [he’s] going to be able to make heaven” as he was asked about his attempt to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine
US President Donald Trump has admitted he’s “not sure [he’s] going to be able to make heaven”. The 79 year old Commander-in-Chief made the candid confession when quizzed by reporters about his efforts to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine – nations locked in conflict since Moscow’s invasion in February 2022.
He remarked: “If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I think that’s pretty – I want to try to get to heaven if possible. I’m being a little cute.” The Republican leader then joked with journalists: “I don’t think there’s anything going to get me in heaven.
“I really don’t. I think I’m not maybe heaven-bound. I may be in heaven right now as we fly on Air Force One. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to make heaven, but I’ve made life a lot better for a lot of people.”
President Trump was travelling to Israel to observe the liberation of hostages in Gaza and Palestinian detainees, set to be released under a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas – with the politician telling reporters the arrangement was “much harder” to negotiate due to his predecessor Joe Biden’s actions.
He stated: “And by the way, the Israeli thing was much harder to get settled because of the past administration.”
Following his visit to Israel, Trump is set to travel to Egypt for a summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, where he’ll be joined by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Whilst aboard Air Force One, Trump was quizzed by the BBC about whether he believes the ceasefire agreement will endure, to which he responded: “Everybody is happy, and I think it’s going to stay that way … I’m good at solving wars. I’m good at making peace.”
Back in August, President Trump appeared on Fox and Friends via telephone, where he discussed with the programme’s presenters how he might bring the Ukraine conflict to an end.
Alongside suggesting he could act as a go-between for Russian President Vladimir Putin, 73, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 47, President Trump made light of his prospects for reaching the afterlife, claiming he’s “not doing well” in that particular endeavour.
The politician remarked with humour at the time: “If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I think that’s pretty – I want to try to get to heaven if possible.
“I’m hearing that I’m not doing well. I am really at the bottom of the totem pole … But if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons.”
