Reports suggest that a dog walker was the one who stumbled upon the grizzly scene and alerted police to the charred corpse that they discovered in the forest in Wiltshire
Police have launched a major investigation after the charred remains of a man were discovered in Savernake Forest, near Marlborough in Wiltshire.
Found just before 8am on Monday, August 25, near Charcoal Burners Road, the discovery has sent shockwaves through the idyllic woodland, which is ordinarily a magnet for families, campers, and dog walkers.
Wiltshire Police reportedly responded quickly to a call, sealing off the area as forensic teams searched the area. The victim, confirmed to be male, remains unidentified.
Wiltshire Police revealed the remains were “burnt,” but the cause and duration of the body’s presence in the forest are still unclear. While the death is currently deemed “non-suspicious.”
A spokesperson revealed: “We’re investigating a sudden death in Savernake Forest from around 8am on Monday. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances and identify the deceased.
“We urge the public and media to avoid speculation.” A number of reports have suggested that the body was discovered by a dog-walker, however police were not able to confirm this, and instead pressed for anyone with information to step forward.
Savernake Forest, managed by Forestry England, is a Special Site of Scientific Interest and a historic park, famed for its ancient oaks and tranquil trails. It is privately owned by the Marquess of Ailesbury and his son the Earl of Cardigan, and is administered by trustees
Its popularity with visitors makes this grim find all the more jarring.
The cordon, reportedly lifted later on Monday, hasn’t eased local unease, with police boosting their presence in the area over the coming days.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We were called to a report that a body had been found in Savernake Forest, Marlborough, at 8am on Monday, August 25.
“A cordon was put in place and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.”
