James Morrison has dived deep on his personal and soulful new album Fight Another Day and he says his two young daughters kept him going this past year following the tragic death of his partner Gill Catchpole
James Morrison credits his daughters with unlocking a new side of his music after the tragic death of his parner.
Last year, the You Give Me Something singer tragically lost partner Gill Catchpole and became a single dad.
He says his kids have kept him grounded and provided honest feedback on new album, Fight Another Day.
James told the Daily Star: “Kids don’t sugarcoat anything, do they? If they don’t like a song, they’ll just say it. But when they do like something, you can tell it’s genuine.
“They keep me grounded, remind me not to take myself too seriously.”
They lift him up on those tough days: “Some days I just let myself feel a bit rubbish, y’know?
“But usually it’s the simple things that keep me going – my kids, a bit of fresh air, just reminding myself that things pass.
“Music’s always been my therapy too, so even if I don’t feel like fighting, picking up the guitar kind of sneaks the fight back into me.”
Therapy has also been key to James writing from the heart: “Therapy kind of opened me up, helped me see patterns I’d been stuck in.
“Writing after that felt freer, more honest.
“Instead of just writing what I thought people wanted to hear, I was writing what I needed to say.
“It gave the songs a different kind of depth.”
It’s not just his songwriting that’s evolved either – he’s enjoyed leaning into a new sound too.
The 41-year-old shared: “I’ve always loved soul and big arrangements, but this time I wasn’t afraid to push it further.
“I didn’t want to box myself in- If it felt good, we went with it.
“Some tracks are stripped back, some are more expansive, it’s just me following the vibe.”
Fight Another Day is out October 3.
Ed Sheeran hitches a lift from Camila Cabello in New York
It looks like Ed Sheeran has found a tour guide since moving Stateside.
Ed was spotted being driven around New York by pal Camila Cabello.
Rather than showing him the sights, it appears the pair have another collaboration in the works, as they were filming a music video.
Ed was also spotted jumping on a bus and giving a brief impromptu performance in the streets.
The chart star explained his temporary move to America was to make touring there easier: “I have a family so I can’t dip in and out.”
