Emergency services raced to a burning building in Lerchenau, Munich after reports of ‘loud banging noises’ – an injured person was found ‘who might be connected to the incident’
A man has died after he allegedly set his parents’ home on fire using explosives, according to reports. Emergency services raced to the scene at around 4:40am today (October 1) to discover a residential building in Lerchenau, north Munich, engulfed in flames, accompanied by “loud banging noises”.
Munich Police reported finding an injured individual at the property “who might be connected to the incident”. The street has since been cordoned off and locals have been advised to steer clear of the area or find an alternative route. Nearby primary and middle schools have also been closed as officers continue their probe.
The corpse of a man was reportedly discovered at the scene. He is believed to have used explosives to ignite his parents’ home, BILD reports. Police said the investigation would delay the morning opening of the Munich Oktoberfest beer festival.
At least one other person was found with gunshot injuries near Lerchenauer Lake, according to the publication. In a statement posted to X, Munich Police said: “Currently, we are conducting an operation in the Lerchenau area together with the fire department. There are significant traffic disruptions. Avoid the area by taking a wide detour”, reports the Mirror.
“We are responding to an incident due to a burning residential building. Additionally, loud banging noises were heard. An injured person was found who might be connected to the incident. We are on the scene together with the fire department.”
Residents have spotted a massive plume of smoke billowing from where the suspected blast occurred. Police Chief Inspector Thomas Schelshorn informed BILD: “There is currently no danger to the public. There is also no connection to Oktoberfest.”
The city has been hosting the iconic beer festival, Oktoberfest. There, a slew of Oktoberfest tourists have been left fuming after their £56-a-night ‘glamping’ accommodation at the world’s biggest beer festival turned out to be rows of cramped, grey tents.
One company, Stoke Travel, provides pre-erected two person tents with camping mattresses and sleeping bags, a daily bottomless brunch and campsite parties for just 65 euros (£56) a night.
Many campers took to TikTok to post videos and pictures of their less-than-impressive lodgings and other social media users were quick to comment on their own past experiences.
One a commenter wrote, “I did that last year… god speed’, while another one said, ‘Me and my boyfriend did this last year. We lasted a night and got a hotel”.
Social media posts from those who did decide to stay showed rows of packed, grey, tiny tents and many amused captions.
