Liverpool have won all four of their Premier League games so far this season, but Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker have both admitted the Reds are missing something
Liverpool’s 2025/26 campaign has got underway in thrilling fashion under Arne Slot with a mix of determination and flair delivering four straight victories.
The champions of England are once again perched at the top of the Premier League table thanks to a combination stubbornness and supremacy in their breathtaking early-season displays against Bournemouth, Newcastle United, Arsenal and Burnley, all won thanks to exhilarating late winners.
Defensive weaknesses shown in their opening two fixtures have been resolved with two clean sheets on the bounce. However, despite their flawless start, there is still room for improvement, with the Reds yet to reach their free-flowing best when going forwards, after bringing in some £450m of new talent and seeing more than £250m of players depart.
Next up is Atletico Madrid at home in the Champions League before the Reds welcome Everton at the weekend for the Merseyside Derby. Here’s all the latest news from Anfield.
Salah transfer claim repeated
Liverpool shot-stopper Alisson Becker has confessed the Reds are experiencing the absence left by departed talents Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, mirroring feelings previously expressed by Mohamed Salah regarding the difficulties of blending new signings, reports the Mirror.
Speaking following the tight triumph against Burnley on Sunday, Alisson emphasised the vitality and impact the duo delivered, stating: “All the players who left were important.
“Lucho [Luis Diaz], Darwin [Nunez], they all made a difference for us with goals or their playing, fighting, defending. They had good energy, and we miss them.”
Salah, who slotted home a 95th-minute penalty to secure a slender 1-0 victory against the Clarets, emphasised afterwards that patience was required for new signings to blend with the current squad.
The Egyptian striker highlighted the adjustment challenges, especially when it comes to building understanding on the pitch.
He said: “The players are adapting to our system. We had a few new players in the starting line-up. It takes time to adapt their game to our game.”
He particularly referenced Alexander Isak’s recent arrival, adding: “Alex [Isak] also came last week and he’s going to be in the team. We try to find the balance.”
This acknowledgement reflects wider worries about attacking chemistry, with Salah previously confessing to difficulties linking up with new arrivals like Hugo Ekitike.
He said: “So far, I didn’t figure the connections out yet… I know where to find them. I knew their game very well, but with Hugo, he’s still new.”
While Ekitike has shown promise and scored twice in his early outings, the continued pleas for patience from Liverpool’s key figures suggest complete harmony could take weeks, or even months, during a punishing fixture schedule.
Isak debut update
Isak’s £125m switch from Newcastle has sparked considerable excitement on Merseyside, but supporters are being made to wait after the striker was omitted from Liverpool’s journey to Burnley.
In a bid to push through his move to Anfield, Isak missed Newcastle’s pre-season tour along with their opening league matches, leaving him short of match sharpness.
However, he’s being tipped to make his debut against Atletico in the Champions League on Wednesday after being seen back in full training on Tuesday.
Manager Arne Slot also confirmed that Isak is nearing a return to action, hinting at a possible 45-minute appearance later this week, after the Burnley game.
He said: “Alex is far from ready for a schedule of three games in a week for 90 minutes. We could have used him today for five or 10 minutes and again on Wednesday, but we don’t believe that’s the way to build him up.
“Now we will be able either Wednesday or Saturday to play 45 as a minimum or maybe a bit more. But if he plays 45 on Wednesday don’t expect him to play 45 or more on Saturday because his body is not prepared for that in our opinion.”
Supporters are eagerly anticipating the addition of Isak’s firepower to an already lethal attack, particularly after his impressive 27-goal tally for Newcastle last season. While Slot is understandably cautious, it won’t be long before the striker is fully unleashed.
