Owen Cooper won the award for his lead role in drama series Adolescence, which became a global hit
Today, 15 year old Owen Cooper made history by becoming the youngest ever male winner of an acting Emmy.
The young lad bagged the award for his leading role in the drama series Adolescence, which wowed audiences on Netflix earlier this year. Upon receiving the award at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, a surprised Cooper admitted that when he started drama classes, he never imagined he’d end up in the US, “let alone here”.
Owen, hailing from Warrington, Cheshire, said: “I was nothing about three years ago, I’m here now. Step out of your comfort zone a little, who cares if you get embarrassed.”
In the Netflix miniseries, the youngster played Jamie Miller, a role that saw Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham also scoop the award for writing in a limited or anthology series at the Emmy ceremony.
Roxana Zal previously held the record as the youngest Emmy winner at age 14, winning best supporting actress in a limited series or special for the TV movie “Something About Amelia” in 1984. However, Owen has now claimed the title of the youngest male to win any acting Emmy, reports the Mirror.
Addressing the audience at the theatre, Owen reiterated: “I was nothing about three years ago, and now here I am.”
Speaking to journalists just after his victory, Owen added: “It means some much to me. It means so much to me, my family, people back home. So, you know, it’s just, yeah, it just means a lot to me.”
When asked how his mates would react to his win, Cooper suggested they might still be asleep “because it’s four in the morning at home”, before adding: “They’ll be all over the moon, yes.”
Adolescence marked his television debut and, following its triumph, he has since filmed sequences for Film Club, an forthcoming BBC drama, whilst also securing the role of Young Heathcliff in an upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
Seth Rogen, Jean Smart and Katherine LaNasa were amongst those honoured with accolades at the glittering ceremony. Tramell Tillman and Britt Lower also claimed early victories for their performances in Severance.
Meanwhile, Apple TV’s The Studio smashed an Emmy Awards record for the most wins by a comedy series in a single season. The show scooped an impressive 12 trophies, including Seth Rogen’s prize for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, during the star-studded event at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
The Studio’s remarkable haul surpassed the previous record held by The Bear, which claimed 11 Emmy wins last year.
Following his comedy actor triumph, 43 year old Seth expressed his disbelief: “I could not wrap my head around this happening. I’ve never won anything in my life.”
Seth both co-directs and stars in The Studio, a biting satirical comedy centring on the struggling film production house Continental Studios.
Seth shares his directing Emmy with long-time creative partner and Studio co-creator Evan Goldberg. Recent critical acclaim has been heaped upon Seth’s performance.
One glowing review states: “Rogen has made a lot of very funny stuff over the years, but this is by far the best thing he’s ever done. It’s been said that in order to make an effective satire, you first have to love, or at least care about, the thing you’re mocking.”
