Actress and comedian Aubrey Plaza has discussed her husband’s suicide for the first time after he died back in January while the pair were reportedly separated
Aubrey Plaza has spoken out about her husband’s suicide for the first time.
The Parks and Rec actress appeared on former co-star Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast and explained that she has been experiencing a “daily struggle” since her husband Jeff Baena committed suicide back in January.
She said: “Right in this very present moment I feel happy to be with you. Overall I’m here and I’m functioning.”
Plaza said she is “very grateful to be moving through the world” and is currently feeling “okay,” before she compered her mourning process to the movie Gorge. The film follows two snipers that guard a gorge without knowing what is inside and Aubrey explained her analogy to Amy.
“That’s what my grief feels like or what grief could be like. At all times, there’s, like, a giant ocean of just awfulness that’s just right there and I can see it.”
“Sometimes I just want to dive into it and be in it and sometimes I look at it and sometimes I just try to get away from it, but it’s always there,” she said, before Amy questioned how she “stays on the cliff and not in the gorge.”
Aubrey explained: “A group of my women friends, we have a text chain and we do Zooms and trips and those girls make me laugh really, really hard.”
“We’ve all known each other for so long. That’s the best thing that makes me laugh, my funny friends.”
Plaza and Baena began dating back in 2011 and to celebrate their 10th anniversary, the duo donned tie-dye pyjamas and decided to get married. They were reportedly separated when Jeff sadly died on 3 January 2025.
