King Charles could get to see his grandchildren Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, for the first time since 2022 after the Home Office reportedly commissioned a review into Harry’s security
Prince Harry has reportedly won a Government review of the decision to strip him of round-the-clock armed police protection when he visits the UK. The news has raised hopes King Charles could see his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet for the first time since 2022.
King Charles hasn’t seen Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, since they visited for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations three years ago. Harry has said it is not safe for them to visit the UK, after his taxpayer-funded protection was removed in 2020 he and wife Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, stepped down as working royals.
Back in May, the Duke of Sussex lost a high-court fight to have his protection reinstated. In an interview at the time, Harry slammed a “good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up”, and said: “The other side have won in keeping me unsafe. I can’t see a world in which I will be bringing my wife and children back at this point.”
But a source close to the Duke said in October that, after Shabana Mahmood was appointed Home Secretary in September, Harry submitted a formal request for a risk assessment to the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec), which is overseen by the Home Office.
Now, for the first time since 2020, the Home Office has now commissioned a threat assessment, according to The Sun. The report claimed Ravec has now instructed its Risk Management Board to reassess his threat level, with a decision expected next month.
If it rules he requires armed protection, then taxpayers would pay for it whenever the Duke is in the UK. He currently has to contact the Met Police 30 days before arriving in the UK for his security to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis., which critics have argued is more expensive.
A Government spokesperson said: “The UK Government’s protective security system is rigorous and proportionate. It is our long-standing policy not to provide detailed information on those arrangements, as doing so could compromise their integrity and affect individuals’ security.”
After relocating to Canada, Harry and Meghan now live in the USA. During Harry’s last visit to the UK in September, a “known stalker” came “within feet” of him on two occasions, according to a report from The Telegraph.
Meanwhile, Meghan Markle has reached out to her poorly dad for the first time since 2018 after he was left fighting for his life in hospital.
The Duchess of Sussex has tried to make contact with gravely ill Thomas Markle Snr after he had his leg amputated following surgery in the Philippines. It remains unclear if they have actually spoken.
