WARNING, GRAPHIC CONTENT: Detectives are hunting the gunman who was seen in the video jumping out of his car and shooting at the 19-year-old in what police believe was ‘a targeted attack’
Terrifying footage of a man jumping out of his car and shooting at a teenager three times was captured on a home camera.
Detectives are now hunting the gunman, who can be seen in the video getting out of the back of a black Mercedes and shooting twice, before firing a third time as the victim fled for his life.
The 19-year-old victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition after being struck in the back and leg following the frightening ordeal at 20:50 GMT last Friday, reports the BBC. His condition has since improved, and police said he was “serious but stable” following what they believe may have been ‘a targeted attack’.
The violent incident has sent shockwaves through the community of Huyton, Merseyside, where the terrifying ordeal took place in a residential area.
Footage widely circulated on social media showed the victim walking along Manley Road in Huyton looking at his phone, before the Mercedes is seen breaking a few metres ahead of him.
In the footage, captured by either a doorbell or home CCTV camera, the hooded suspect is then seen jumping out of the rear passenger side door, pointing the weapon with both hands.
Three loud bangs can be heard in the footage as the victim turns and runs out of frame in the direction he came from. The gunman then runs back to the car before it speeds away from the scene.
Merseyside Police said no arrests have yet been made.
Det Insp Chris Clark from the force’s Firearms Investigation Team said: “We are aware of footage in circulation showing this appalling incident, and this footage of course forms part of our investigation.
“It appears to have been a targeted attack, and we are keeping an open mind as to the reason behind it.”
“Although the use of firearms on Merseyside has declined significantly in recent years, any shooting is unacceptable and we have a dedicated team of officers and staff to ensure that anyone who brings firearms into our communities is subject to investigation.
Det Insp Clark added it is hoped the victim will make a “full recovery”.
A police cordon was established on Manley Road whilst officers conducted door-to-door inquiries and examined CCTV footage following the attack last Friday Photos from the scene show officers in hazmat suits gathering forensic evidence as they piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
Detectives are also making urgent appeals for witnesses and any dashcam footage from the vicinity around the time of the shooting, according to the Liverpool Echo. Chief Inspector Andy Hughes said: “We are still in the very early stages of an investigation and we are determined to find the person or people responsible.
“A young man is currently in hospital with significant injuries and I’m sure the community will be utterly appalled at what has happened this evening. I want to reassure local residents in the area, as well as the wider Merseyside, that we are taking this incident extremely seriously and we are relentless in our pursuit of those involved in gun crime.”
