Jamie Carragher believes Mohamed Salah needs to “speak for the team” for Liverpool, amid the club’s ongoing struggles in the Premier League
Jamie Carragher has urged Mohamed Salah to break his silence and speak up for the team after Liverpool slumped to a dismal 3-0 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest, marking their sixth loss in seven Premier League matches.
The Reds’ latest setback has left them languishing in 11th place, a staggering 11 points adrift of table-toppers Arsenal. Carragher has called on Salah to take responsibility and address the club’s struggles, rather than relying on captain Virgil van Dijk.
The former Liverpool defender pointed out that Salah was vocal about his contract situation last season but has since remained tight-lipped amidst the team’s current poor form. Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Carragher said: “I don’t know.
Nobody knows. The manager sees the players every day and he can’t quite fix it at the moment. We are talking about a manager who has won the Premier League.
“I think Virgil van Dijk, after the game, has come out again and spoke as he should do as the captain and called Liverpool a mess. I must say on the back of all these Liverpool defeats it’s always Van Dijk who comes out.
“And as I have said, the captain should do that but there should be other players in that dressing room coming out and speaking for the club.”, reports the Mirror.
This weekend marks a year since Salah publicly spoke out about his contract situation at Liverpool, and one pundit is now urging the Egyptian star to use his voice to rally the team.
Carragher believes it’s all too rare to hear from Salah, pointing out that the winger usually only speaks to the press when he’s received an individual award or is seeking a new deal.
He said: “A year ago this weekend, Mo Salah wasn’t shy in coming out and speaking about his own situation, about the club not offering him a contract.
“I only ever hear Salah speak when he gets man of the match or he needs a new contract. I would like to see Salah come out as one of the leaders, one the legends of Liverpool, come out and speak for the team. It shouldn’t always be the captain.”
Salah’s current form is a far cry from his record-breaking Premier League campaign in 2024/25, where he contributed to an astonishing 47 goals. This season, he’s managed just four goals and two assists in 12 appearances.
Liverpool are also struggling, picking up just 18 points from a possible 30 this term. The latest setback came in the form of a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, which left head coach Slot reeling.
“How bad [the result is], that is difficult to measure, but it was very bad of course. Playing at home, losing 3-0, no matter which team you face is, of course, a very, very, very bad result,” the Dutch boss said.
“Unexpected if you look at the first half-hour of the game [because] in my opinion [it was] a good start from us. [I] haven’t seen us creating so much in the first half-hour of a game maybe throughout the whole season.
“I’m not sure because I don’t remember every single game now, but we were able to create a lot.
“The first time they arrived in our box, they scored a goal and it’s a very difficult cocktail to drink, or to have, if you miss out on your own chances and almost every time you concede one, the ball goes in.”
