Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, were both killed in the terror attack outside Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue, in Middleton Road, Crumpsall, on Thursday morning
The two victims of the devastating terror attack in Manchester have been identified as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66. Both men tragically lost their lives in the assault outside Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue, on Middleton Road, Crumpsall, on Thursday morning.
The assailant drove a car into bystanders before exiting the vehicle and launching a stabbing spree. The incident occurred on Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar.
Greater Manchester Police revealed the attacker, who was fatally shot by armed police during the incident, as 35 year old Jihad Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian origin. The authorities are currently investigating his motives, treating the incident as a terror-related attack.
Mr Daulby and Mr Cravitz, both members of Manchester’s Jewish community, were killed in the attack, while four others sustained injuries, three of whom remain in hospital with serious conditions. Al-Shamie was gunned down by police after donning ‘a vest which had the appearance of an explosive device’, later determined to be ‘not viable’.
A GMP spokesperson issued a statement this morning (October 3), confirming: “The two innocent members of our Jewish Community who sadly died as a result of the incident at Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue yesterday (Thursday 2 October 2025) have been named.”, reports the Manchester Evening News.
“Whilst formal identification is yet to take place, they are believed to be 53-year-old Adrian Daulby and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz both from Crumpsall. Their families have been informed and Family Liaison Officers are in contact with them and offering support. Home Office post mortems will take place later this morning.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Lewis Hughes, who’s coordinating the casualty response, said: “My deepest sympathies are with Mr Daulby and Mr Cravitz’s loved ones at this extremely hard time.
“Specially trained Family Liaison Officers are in contact with them. They will continue to update them on the investigation and support them throughout the coronial process.
“Whilst there are processes which must be followed, we commit to being mindful of cultural preferences and sensitivities and to ensuring that these men and their loved ones’ wishes are respected.”
Three people – two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s – were arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism yesterday.
Alongside Middleton Road, scenes were put in place on nearby White House Avenue, Crumpsall, where two men were pictured being arrested, and Langley Crescent – a tiny residential street in Prestwich where Al-Shamie is believed to have lived.
On Friday morning, the scene on White House Avenue had lifted. In an update issued on Friday morning, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) announced that additional police officers had been deployed across the region ‘to provide reassurance’.
The extra resources will ensure a high visibility presence in North Manchester, Bury, and Salford, particularly within Jewish communities and around synagogues, with increased visits to local places of worship, the force added.
City of Manchester District Commander, Chief Superintendent David Meeney stated: “We have taken this action to ensure that our Jewish communities and wider communities within Greater Manchester feel safe and reassured following yesterday’s tragic incident in Crumpsall.
“People in North Manchester, Bury, Salford, within Jewish communities, and around synagogues can expect to see uniformed officers on patrol in vehicles and on foot throughout today, into this evening, and over the weekend.
“They are there to reassure you and, whilst they may not be able to answer questions about the investigation, they will be happy to reassure you about the actions we are taking to ensure communities are safe and feel safe. We are conscious of the significance of Fridays and Saturdays in the Jewish faith, and will be doing everything we can to help communities mark Shabbat with their families and friends as they wish.”
