Liverpool transfer target Marc Guehi was on the scoresheet as Crystal Palace beat Aston Villa 3-0 on Sunday, but the defender remained coy on his future after the match
Liverpool target Marc Guehi kept his cards close to his chest regarding his future after finding the net during Crystal Palace’s commanding 3-0 victory at Aston Villa.
The Reds have been strongly linked with a swoop for the 25 year old England international and submitted an enhanced £35 million offer for the player on Saturday. Following club-to-club discussions earlier this month, Arne Slot’s team opted to table a direct proposal to Palace which remains under consideration. The offer is believed to feature a ten per cent sell-on clause.
Nevertheless, Palace are reportedly seeking £35m plus £5m in add-ons. Negotiations between Liverpool and the Eagles continue and there’s optimism that a deal can be struck within the next 24 hours.
Despite Liverpool’s approach and their eagerness to secure Guehi’s signature, he still turned out for Palace as Oliver Glasner’s squad travelled to Villa for the late Sunday fixture.
The ex-Chelsea centre-half delivered an outstanding performance and netted a spectacular strike as the Eagles cruised to victory in the West Midlands, with Palace featuring him prominently in their pre-match team news graphic in a deliberate statement, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Following the match, Guehi was quizzed about representing Palace, his prospects and his current frame of mind amid rumours surrounding a possible exit and a late summer switch to Liverpool FC.
He told Sky Sports: “I am OK. I don’t like the limelight too much, there are a lot of cameras in my face all the time and constantly talking about me but I’m glad I have got a good club and good teammates around me.
“When you focus on what’s important, which is the football, it makes it a lot easier.”
When asked about his feelings towards playing for Palace, Guehi confessed: “A lot. South London boy, grew up in South London. Captained the football club from a young age. They have been fantastic for me and my family.
“Definitely a pleasure to be playing for this football club.”
Ahead of the match, Glasner seemed confident that he can retain Guehi at Palace. “Yes, of course, he has a contract here for Crystal Palace, he plays well and trains well so that’s clear,” Glasner stated in a pre-match interview regarding Guehi’s inclusion in the starting line-up against Villa.
“He’s our captain and he starts today as captain. “The situation is clear, everybody knows about it and Marc is a great guy and that’s why he starts.”
