Liverpool have overcome Arsenal as they extended their 100 per cent record in the Premier League thanks a delightful Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick
There were a few eyebrows raised when Arne Slot named his team on Sunday afternoon.
Autumn feels like it’s here, and so too do the excuses of “it’s early in the season” and “we’re still rusty from pre-season” – but Liverpool headed into the clash with no proven right-back. Dominik Szoboszlai was given the nod by Slot – and he repaid him 10-fold.
Szoboszlai was exceptional at Anfield, channeling his inner-Trent Alexander-Arnold to ping balls across the park while putting in a defensive masterclass.
And it was the Hungarian that broke the deadlock, standing over a free-kick that was dead centre of the pitch – unleashing a strike that dipped and weaved past David Raya, who was between the sticks for the Gunners.
Daily Star Sport has a look at the player ratings for Liverpool’s win over Arsenal
Alisson – Didn’t really have a lot to do throughout the clash, but was solid when called into action. 6.
Dominik Szoboszlai – Played out of postion and didn’t look completely out his depth – scored the opening goal with a truly special free-kick. 8.
Ibrahima Konate – Had a good game keeping Viktor Gyokeres quiet. Proved his passing ability, too, picking out Hugo Ekitike as he switched from defence to attack. 7.
Virgil van Dijk – Made some good blocks, but still gave the ball away in dangerous areas a couple of times. Still looking for the form that made him of the Premier League’s best ever defenders. 6.
Milos Kerkez – Still looks out of his depth in Slot’s system, it’s early days for Kerkez, but he needs to start performing and soon. 5.
Ryan Gravenberch – Looked strong in the centre of park, helping to break up Arsenal’s attacks and progress Liverpool up the pitch. 6.
Alexis Mac Allister – Still searching for full fitness, but all the positive signs are there that he will soon be back to his very best. 6.
Mohamed Salah – One of the best players the Premier League has ever seen on his day, but he was far too invisible against Arsenal at times on Sunday. had a couple of poor touches once he did get involved. 6.
Florian Wirtz – Still looking to find his feet on the banks of the River Mersey, again looked off the pace on Sunday afternoon as he failed to find passes and was muscled off the ball. 5.
Cody Gakpo – Much like Salah, Gakpo was invisible for large portions of the clash. 6.
Hugo Ekitike – Turned the ball into the back of the net, but was in an offside position, looked lively through the afternoon. 6.
Curtis Jones (Mac Allister, 60) – Couple of decent moments but failed to really impose himself on the clash. 6.
Federico Chiesa (Ekitike, 76) – Didn’t really have a lot of time on the pitch. 6.
Joe Gomez (Konate, 76) – Had a decent defensive showing. 6.
