EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick “will not be returning” to the show following his suspension, which began back in June, after a behind-the-scenes incident while filming Strictly Come Dancing
EastEnders’ star Jamie Borthwick will not be retuning to Albert Square.
The 31-year-old actor has brought Jay Brown to life since 2006 but on 6 September, The Mirror reported that the BBC star won’t be making his way back onto the EastEnders set.
BBC Studios, the production house behind the East London drama series, stated: “We can confirm that Jamie Borthwick will not be returning to EastEnders. We do not comment on individual matters.”
Earlier this month reports suggested Jamie would be making his comeback to the programme, just three months after facing suspension for allegedly using a derogatory slur about disabled people. The suspension story emerged in June, six months on from Jamie’s stint on Strictly Come Dancing 2024.
The incident allegedly took place during the BBC dance competition’s live broadcast filmed at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom during the 22nd series, reports the Mirror.
According to reports, Jamie was caught on camera using an offensive term about disabled people and following the video’s emergence, Jamie released a statement to The Sun on Sunday: “I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly.”
“I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning.”
“That is on me completely. Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong.”
During his time on EastEnders, Jamie Borthwick’s character was at the centre of several major plotlines including his father Jase Dyer’s death and his romance with Lola Pearce, who tragically died from cancer in May 2023. Borthwick claimed the Best Actor gong at the 2023 Inside Soap Awards, where the programme also secured Best Storyline for Loving and Losing Lola – chronicling Lola Pearce-Brown’s brain tumour journey.
