At least two students were shot after a mass shooting took place in a US high school 28 miles southwest of Denver, with the local hospital treating three critical patients, their ages unknown
At least two students have been shot at a high school in Colorado, US, with a local hospital treating three critical patients. The incident occurred at Evergreen High School, located around 28 miles southwest of Denver, earlier today (September 10).
According to a spokesperson for Common Spirit St. Anthony Hospital, the medical facility is treating three critical patients right now, with their ages unknown as of now.
US President Donald Trump has received updates on the incident alongside Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The governor posted on X: “I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence”.
Trump used Truth Social to announce the White House would “continue to monitor the terrible situation”, whilst urging people to join him in “praying for everyone involved.”
Minneapolis authorities confirmed at the time that there was “no active threat to the community”, though residents were left shocked and full of grief.
According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, an armed individual approached the building and began shooting through the church windows, with rounds directed at children seated in the pews.
He stated: “During the mass, a gunman approached on the outside, on the side of the building and began firing a rifle through the church windows towards the children sitting in the pews at the mass.”
The police chief also observed that a wooden plank had been positioned to block some of the side entrances. “This was a deliberate act of violence against innocent children and other people worshipping. The sheer cruelty and cowardice of firing into a church full of children is absolutely incomprehensible,” he stated.
The school underwent evacuation, with pupils’ families subsequently directed to a “reunification zone” at the premises. Beyond the building, surrounded by a substantial uniformed police presence, were uniformed youngsters in their dark green shirts or dresses.
Numerous children could be seen leaving the school alongside adults, sharing prolonged embraces and dabbing at tears.
Bill Bienemann, a nearby resident, reported hearing “so much” gunfire consisting of shots that were “sporadic”. He informed CNN affiliate KARE: “I was on a call, all the windows of our home were open. I know what gunfire sounds like and, and, I could tell. I was shocked. I said there’s no way that that could be gunfire.”
It comes as the US has faced several school shootings this year. Just last month, a gunman named Robin Westman opened fire at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, with two youngsters fighting for their lives in hospital.
