Police rushed to the scene at Southampton docks shortly after 11am this morning and conducted a number of searches after a bomb threat was called in as one man has been arrested
A cruise ship at Southampton docks has been evacuated following a “bomb threat”.
Police are at the scene and have established a 200 metre cordon around P&O’s Ventura cruise ship. They were called to the scene at 11.46am after a bomb threat was called in.
A passenger aboard the ship told the Daily Echo he was eating lunch when armed police swarmed into the car park. The 28-year-old said: “The captain made an announcement that we were in the bomb zone and we had to get out.
“They stopped letting guests on board and closed off the port. Crazy stuff.
“We didn’t get off. The police stood everyone down because they cleared it, and it resumed normal operations.
“I am ok, but a lot of the guests are really frustrated, saying it’s ruined the start of our holiday.”
He added that he saw about nine armed police cars and 20 officers with rifles.
A spokesperson for operator of the docks Associated British Ports (ABP) said: “We are aware of a security incident that occurred at the Port this morning, Saturday 9 August. Police attended the scene and have since stood down.
“Normal operations at the Port have resumed. We will support any ongoing enquiries by the relevant authorities.”
After searching a number of vehicles, police said they were satisfied there was no risk posed to the public.
A man has been arrested on suspicion of communicating false information and a public order offence.
