The UK is set to sizzle in a heatwave from Monday, with the Met Office issuing a warning for parts of the country as Tropical Storm Dexter invades from the Atlantic
Following a first half of the summer holidays plagued by disappointing weather, it appears summer is poised to return in the coming days. Although Storm Floris delivered “unseasonably” powerful winds to Britain earlier this week, another weather system is approaching, and this one is anticipated to bring a scorching heatwave.
Tropical Storm Dexter is travelling across the Atlantic and is forecast to reach northern Britain by late Saturday. Whilst Scotland may experience unsettled conditions with gusts and downpours, England and Wales could witness temperatures climbing high enough for officials to declare a heatwave.
The Met Office states that the remnants of Tropical Storm Dexter will pull warm air from the southwest across Britain, potentially creating sweltering conditions. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow heat health alert for a substantial portion of the nation beginning Monday, August 11, as the blazing weather system approaches.
With temperatures set to climb above 30C in certain central, southern, and eastern regions of England on Monday and Tuesday, and predictions of 27C for Wales, the heat is definitely building, reports the Mirror.
Only select areas of England were covered by the official heat warning, but residents throughout the UK can still anticipate a considerable temperature increase, reports Wales Online. Should the forecasts prove accurate, Wales is also set for a heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach at least 25C over three consecutive days.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Steven Keates, commented: “We’re confident that temperatures will increase markedly by the start of next week, reaching the low 30s Celsius in parts of England on Monday and perhaps the mid 30s in a few places on Tuesday.
“However, the length of this warm spell is still uncertain, and it is possible that high temperatures could persist further into next week, particularly in the south.
“Ex-Dexter sets the wheels in motion for an uptick in temperatures, but the weather patterns then maintaining any hot weather are rather more uncertain”. Stay ahead with the biggest stories in Wales by subscribing to our daily newsletter here.
Based on Met Office weather charts, from Monday to Wednesday, vast areas of Wales can anticipate temperatures around 25C.
Tuesday is looking to be the week’s hottest day, with the thermometer expected to climb into the mid to high-twenties across the nation.
Cardiff and Newport are forecast to enjoy highs of 27°C.
Although there’ll be a modest drop in temperature from Thursday, the balmy conditions are expected to continue for much of the month.
The Met Office’s long-range outlook indicates high pressure will dominate once more, delivering warm and humid weather to extensive parts of the UK. As the month unfolds, we’re anticipated to witness temperatures staying above the seasonal average.
