More than 100 firefighters, some in fire boats, beat back a blaze that engulfed a waterfront seafood restaurant and several boats floating nearby in Seaford Thursday night, the Nassau County Fire Marshal said.
The South Shore restaurant, Crabby Amy’s Clam and Oyster Bar at Treasure Island Marina on Ocean Avenue, was “fully involved” when firefighters arrived after a 9:24 p.m. 911 call, Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said in a news release. It took place at the height of Hurricane Erin’s impact on the Island’s South Shore. Officials had not determined the cause Thursday night.
“Serious damage to the building, the attached marina and several boats,” he said. A fuel spill in the waterway prompted a Coast Guard response, he said.
There were no injuries but damage to the restaurant and vessels was severe. Town of Hempstead building inspectors visited the scene, as did investigators from the fire marshal’s office and Nassau County’s Arson Bomb Squad.
Firefighters from Wantagh Fire Department and seven neighboring departments brought the fire under control in an hour, he said.
Photos showed the skeleton of a building — all that was left — glowing with heat.
In 2013, Crabby Amy’s owner Amy Breidenbach told Newsday that the restaurant had been flooded by Superstorm Sandy and would need to be gutted and repaired.
“I’ve been here basically my whole life,” she said at the time. “Not rebuilding isn’t an option.”
