Darwin Nunez has sent his latest message to Liverpool following his £46.3million move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal as the Reds struggle to agree a deal to sign Alexander Isak
Darwin Nunez has hit the ground running in Saudi Arabia, with the ex-Liverpool forward scoring in Al-Hilal’s final pre-season friendly on Saturday.
Earlier this month, Nunez made a £46.3million switch to Al-Hilal. And the 26-year-old has found the net in all three of his pre-season outings for his new team, scoring in victories against Aarau, Waldhof Mannheim and Al-Fayha. During his stint at Anfield, Nunez had a patchy record, netting just 40 times in 143 matches across all competitions.
Last season, under Arne Slot, he was largely used in a substitute role, making 30 of his 47 appearances from the bench. Liverpool have already bolstered their attacking line-up this summer, splashing out £79m on Hugo Ekitike, and they’re also eyeing Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
However, their initial £110m bid for Isak was rebuffed by the Magpies, who value him closer to £150m. The Sweden international is keen on the move and issued a statement accusing Newcastle of breaking promises by not letting him depart.
“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” Isak slammed in a statement on X.
“That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.”
“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.
“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”
Nevertheless, Newcastle have responded firmly and maintain that “the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired” and that they “do not foresee those conditions being met” before the transfer window closes.
Eddie Howe remains optimistic that the matter will be sorted “pretty quickly”. Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s encounter with Liverpool on Monday, Howe said: “He won’t be part of the squad this weekend.
“The club has to act in the best interests of Newcastle United. It will do that in every situation It looks like it is coming to an end, or it will come to an end pretty quickly.”
