The Orange Manbaby cheered on Team USA as they once again went head-to-head against old golfing rivals Europe. Donald Trump stepped out from bulletproof glass to hype up the crowd
Donald Trump ditched the bulletproof glass he was behind to rev up American spectators on the first day of the Ryder Cup.
The Orange Manbaby, a keen golfer, was introduced to the crowd ahead of the afternoon session at Bethpage Black golf course on Long Island in New York. His appearance brings Secret Service snipers to the course armed with long-range snipers, the coordination of the Secret Service, CIA and FBI and a feeling of occasion as Europe and the USA once again go head to head for one of the biggest prizes in golf.
One hefty-looking sniper was even situated directly behind spectators at the course Trump attended wearing golf shoes, after security was ramped up following the death of far-right political activist Charlie Kirk. Gates were opened at 5am to allow fans ample time to clear screening and take up position on the course, while spectators were also banned from bringing a number of items onto the property.
The president’s presence prompted chants of ‘USA’ before a playing of the national anthem was accompanied by a military aircraft flyover. He is the first sitting president to attend a Ryder Cup and he was accompanied by his granddaughter Kai.
US captain Keegan Bradley bowed in front of the president while European counterpart Luke Donald gave him a ‘thumbs up’.
World number one Scottie Scheffler, involved in the first game alongside JJ Spaun, pointed to the president and pumped his fist.
Their opponents Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka largely ignored the high-profile visitor.
Bradley was certainly hoping Trump’s arrival could prompt an upturn in his side’s fortunes after a disappointing start to their bid to regain the trophy.
“We just had the president fly over on Air Force One, so I have a feeling things are going to turn,” he said earlier.
Europe put themselves in a commanding position after the opening morning, sweeping to a 3-1 lead after the foursomes.
Elsewhere, Trump’s campaign of retribution against his perceived political enemies reached new heights after his justice department brought criminal charges against former FBI director James Comey.
Trump also expanded his efforts to classify certain liberal groups as “domestic terrorist organisations”.
Comey, a long-standing target of the president’s ire, was indicted by a grand jury for allegedly lying to US congress during testimony in 2020.
Hours earlier, Trump signed a memorandum directing his administration to target backers of what he dubbed “left-wing terrorism” as he alleged a vast conspiracy by Democrat-aligned non-profit groups and activists to finance violent protests.
The new developments come just days after Trump publicly demanded action from his attorney general and signalled that his former personal lawyer would serve as the top federal prosecutor in Virginia.
The developments marked a dramatic escalation of the American leader’s extraordinary use of the levers of presidential power to target his political rivals and his efforts to pressure the justice department to pursue investigations – and now prosecutions – of his perceived enemies.
