Green Mile, Wolf Lake and Dances with Wolves star Graham Greene has tragically died with his wife by his side at aged 73
Oscar nominated actor Graham Greene has died aged 73.
His agent, Michael Greene, confirmed the Green Mile star died in hospital with his wife by his side.
In a statement, he said: “He was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed. You are finally free.”
And referencing his former agent, he added: “Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven.” His cause of death has not been revealed, however Variety reported the actor lost his battle with a long illness but did not elaborate.
Greene’s big breakthrough came when Kevin Costner cast him as Kicking Bird (Ziŋtká Nagwáka), one the main characters in Dances with Wolves.
The film landed 12 Academy Award nominations, including one for Greene as Best Supporting Actor, and won seven Oscars, including Best Picture.
As well as his Oscar nomination, Greene is a Grammy, Gemini and Canadian Screen Award winner as well as an Independent Spirit nominee.
He has a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and, earlier this year, received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in his native country. He was was born on June 22, 1952 in Ohsweken, on the Six Nations Reserve.
After his iconic role in Dances with Wolves, he also starred in Maverick (1994) with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) with Bruce Willis, The Green Mile (1999) with Tom Hanks, The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as well as Molly’s Game (2017) with Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba and Costner.
Tributes have been flooding in for Greene.
Lou Diamond Phillips, actor and director who starred alongside Greene in WolfLake, wrote on X: “Heartbroken. Terribly saddened to hear of the passing of Graham Greene at only 73. From Wolf Lake to Longmire, we had a beautiful friendship. An Actor’s Actor. One of the wittiest, wiliest, warmest people I’ve ever known. Iconic and Legendary. RIP, My Brother.”
Sean Fennesse shared four pictures from various times in Greene’s career, with the caption: “Always happy to see Graham Greene on screen. RIP to a great actor.”
One fan wrote: “RIP Graham Greene. Every time he popped up on screen when I was a kid, my mom would excitedly point him out for being an actual Native on the screen. Able to be deadly serious and infinitely hilarious (even in smaller roles like Last of Us), he ate up the screen. Nʌki’wah brother.”
Another added: “graham greene was a titan and such a wonderfully empathetic force of nature on screen. i can’t think of any other actor who was so present throughout my life, at home and at the theater. what a loss for canadian cinema.”
