The final question in an episode of The 1% Club Rollover broadcast this week had viewers on social media talking, with some saying they were ‘stumped’, while others claimed it was ‘too easy’
A challenging brainteaser that only one per cent of the UK could solve, and which won a woman a staggering £194,000 on an ITV quiz show, has left viewers “stumped”. The question was featured in an episode of The 1% Club Rollover, which aired on Tuesday, December 9.
The ITV programme is a spin-off of the popular quiz show The 1% Club, hosted by comedian Lee Mack. The show involves 100 contestants tackling a series of questions that an increasingly smaller percentage of people can answer correctly, culminating in a final question that only one per cent can get right.
The format mirrors the main show, with the exception that unclaimed prize money rolls over to the next episode, and those who reach the final question are invited back for the following episode.
Tuesday’s episode saw two contestants, Nathanial and Michelle, make it to the final one per cent question. They were given the option to either tackle the brainteaser and potentially win a share of the £194,000 prize pot or walk away with a share of £10,000, reports the Mirror.
Both chose to take on the final question, which showed a picture of a bank card with the last four numbers missing. The question – which the finalists had just 30 seconds to solve – was: “Heidi Abbi Bedhead just got a new bank card. If the picture below displays the first 12 digits of the card number, what are the final four?”
The initial 12 digits on the card read 8594 9122 9254, with the last four replaced by question marks. A quiz enthusiast shared the puzzling question on Reddit, admitting, “I’m stumped”.
Reddit users swiftly proposed solutions. Providing a hint towards the correct answer, one user suggested: “The first clue is that it’s a very strange name. The second clue is that the very strange name is 16 characters. If you realise that it becomes obvious.”
Another chimed in: “The red flag in this question is the ridiculous name that they had absolutely no need to be mentioned unless it directly corresponds to the answer. So as soon as you see that you know what to do.”
A third user added: “Golden rule of 1% Club – if something looks a bit weird, it’s the clue. Like here, why would they give us her middle name? So you know you should be looking at the name – then it becomes simple. The tricky thing here is figuring it out and typing it correctly in 30 seconds.”
Viewers watched as both contestants offered different answers to the question. Nathanial, who told Mack he’d likely “might just spend it all on takeaway” if he won, guessed 9214. Meanwhile, Michelle proposed 8514.
After a tense pause, Mack announced that Michelle had provided the correct answer, securing the entire £194,000 prize pot. He declared: “That is the most anyone has won on the show.”
When asked about her feelings, Michelle responded: “I feel like this might be a dream.”
However, some Reddit users argued that the question was surprisingly straightforward for the final puzzle. One user commented: “I got this one right away. There was one beforehand, maybe the 10 per cent question, that I thought was much tougher.”
Another chimed in: “Pretty easy this one.” A third added: “I got this in about three seconds when I watched the show.”
