A family was displaced and two dogs died after a house fire in North Bellmore on Monday evening that left two firefighters with minor injuries, authorities said.
The fire began about 6:14 p.m. in the basement of a two-story, split-level home on Sacco Place, said Nassau County Assistant Chief Fire Marshal Bohdan J. Pilczak in a department news release.
One firefighter who responded fell “through a hole in the first floor” of the home,” Pilczak said. That first responder was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
A second firefighter suffered minor injuries after “partially” falling through the same hole in the structure and was transported to the hospital, according to the release. Emergency medical professionals tended to a third firefighter who sustained an ankle injury.
The towns where the firefighters were stationed were not available late Monday.
The American Red Cross was requested to help the family of two adults and five children who were displaced by the fire, the release said.
About 100 firefighters who responded placed the blaze under control in around an hour, according to Pilczak. Firefighters from departments in Bellmore, East Meadow, Merrick, Seaford, Uniondale and Wantagh responded, as did EMTs from the Bellmore-Merrick Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal and the Nassau County Police Arson/Bomb Squad are investigating the cause of the fire, according to the release. Investigators are looking at a dryer as a “potential cause for the fire,” the release said.
