Manchester United are back in Premier League action on Monday night when they host Everton at Old Trafford, and there are plenty of transfer stories surrounding the Red Devils
Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are set to return to the pitch on Monday night after the international break, hosting Everton in a pivotal match that could mark a turning point in their season.
After an initial struggle with consistency, highlighted by a surprising Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, Amorim’s squad has bounced back. They’re currently on a five-match unbeaten streak for the first time since the Portuguese manager took the reins.
However, Amorim, known for his pragmatic approach during his 12-month tenure, will likely be keeping an eye on the upcoming January transfer window, aiming to bolster his team’s chances of securing a spot in next season’s Champions League.
The central midfield and left wing positions are seen as crucial areas to strengthen. As we inch closer to the eagerly awaited clash next week, Daily Star Sport brings you the latest headlines surrounding the Red Devils.
Crunch talks between Jean-PhilippeMateta and Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace and Jean-Philippe Mateta have been in discussions about a contract extension at Selhurst Park. The French international was one of the players rumoured to be on the move to Old Trafford in the summer, before Benjamin Sesko’s £74m transfer, reports the Mirror.
United, who were reportedly in discussions with Mateta’s camp earlier this year, have recently been hit by an injury setback with Sesko sidelined for several weeks.
This could prompt United to revive their interest in Mateta, who has 18 months remaining on his contract in south London. Last month, when asked about potentially joining an ‘elite’ club, Mateta told RMC Sport: “It’s natural, every ambitious player wants to reach that milestone.
Kobbie Mainoo’s bright spot
Despite enjoying a breakout 2023/24 campaign with his boyhood side, Kobbie Mainoo’s position at United faces uncertainty. Amorim has consistently favoured Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte in his midfield partnership this season over the 20-year-old.
Whilst numerous United supporters would be reluctant to see their cherished talent depart, there could be a positive aspect should they choose to cash in during January or the upcoming summer.
This is because they could utilise the “pure profit” generated from a Mainoo sale to strengthen their financial standing whilst grappling with £1billion worth of debt.
Football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley explained to Football Insider: “I don’t think PSR will be their sole focus. I think it’d be a happy coincidence, if you will.
“We saw this in the summer with PSR and Manchester United. We saw a lot of people were looking at the wrong company. It’s a company called Red Football, which is where the PSR calculation sits.
“So, despite the fact that we’ve seen they’ve had, well, they’ve told us, they’ve had financial problems and plenty of media reports on that, the outlay that they spent in the summer, people were kind of scratching their heads, but they’re okay with PSR ultimately.
“If this were to go through, I think PSR is probably not the sole driver. Of course, it does benefit Manchester United in that sense as well, because you can book that as pure profit and you can book it in the year that it occurs.”
