A chip shop is using AI to take customer orders.
Manager Brad Lee programmed an answering service bot in a bid to save costs on hiring a worker for the role.
He said he turned to the tech because businesses are being battered by the rise in fish prices, the cost of living along with wage and National Insurance increases.
And Mr Lee said he is the only person he knows using the system in a fish and chip shop.
The boss, who runs The Nippy Chippy in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, said: “We’ve been live about six months now and although it’s been hit and miss, a lot of people love it.”
He said firms can forget customers get fed up with local shops not answering the phone and being put on hold while trying to make an order.
Mr Lee added: “So it helps consumers as they can just call up and order [with the AI answer system], and come and collect it or get it delivered.
“And fish and chips have gone through a world war and gone through Covid so I’m sure it will get through this cost of living crisis as well.”
It comes after the world’s first AI “video waiter” was unveiled in London restaurants. The tech from start-up firm LoveBite combines the chat of a human waiter with videos of dishes and cocktails so diners can view the food and drink on offer.
Diners scan a QR code at the table to browse videos of each dish and speak to the chatbot for more information.
The gizmos can talk in any language and recommend grub. LoveBite said diners who view the dish videos typically spend 5% to 10% more.
