Channel 4 is set to air a “captivating” new thriller that features a number of famous faces including a well known Coronation Street star.
Coronation Street star Denise Welch has landed a role in Channel 4 new “captivating and exciting” thriller Tip Toe.
The actress, who is known for her role as Natalie Barnes in the ITV hit soap, will star alongside two Doctor Who alumni, Alan Cumming and David Morrissey.
Set in Manchester, the five-part series, written by multi-BAFTA winning writer Russell T Davies’, features Cumming and Morrissey as neighbours Leo and Clive.
In a press release, the show is described as “vivid, funny and dynamic”, with Leo, who owns a bar named Spit & Polish in Manchester’s Gay Village, having lived next to the “unsmiling and troubled” Clive for a decade and a half.
According to the synopsis: “Just as life should be settling down, the world around them is growing more tense.”
The narrative escalates as “words become weapons, opinions become radicalised, and gradually, two neighbours become deadly enemies in a tense, suburban thriller which challenges everything we consider to be safe”.
The drama is touted as “an urgent tale that brings a spotlight to bear on the prejudices which are creeping back into our lives”.
Reflecting on his involvement in the project, Cumming shared: “The best things in life are worth waiting for, and the best people. Russell T Davies and I have been trying to work together for over 20 years.
“Now, not only are we working together but doing so with one of my dearest, oldest friends, Dave Morrissey, and in a piece of work I think is so brilliant and prescient and necessary. I don’t say this lightly, but this is truly an honour.”
Meanwhile, Morrissey commented: “I’m delighted to be working with Russell again, and also to be working with Alan, who has been a great friend of mine for over 40 years but we’ve never had the chance to work together. It’s a privilege to be with them both on this astonishing piece of work.”
Also joining the cast are Denise as Diane, Pooky Quesnel as Clive’s wife Marie, Jackson Connoras Clive’s youngest son George, Joseph Evans as George’s older brother Saul.
As well as Elizabeth Berrington as Leo’s best friend Stephanie, Iz Hesketh as Zee and Shakeel Kimotho, as Hanna, who both work at Spit & Polish.
Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo as the bar’s manager Judy, Paul Rhys as Melba, a Canal Street fixture and Charlie Condou as Leo’s ex-husband Curtis.
Show writer, Russell T Davies’ most recent Channel 4 drama was the extraordinary and critically acclaimed, It’s A Sin, which powerfully examined the devastating human story behind the 1980s AIDS crisis and went on to become Channel 4’s biggest ever instant boxset on streaming.
Tip Toe will be coming to Channel 4 soon and Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
