Coronation Street’s Eileen Grimshaw left the cobbles for good this year but now the soap has shared a sad update about the former resident
Coronation Street have issued an update on Eileen Grimshaw just two months after her exit.
Eileen (Sue Cleaver) first joined the cobbles back in 2000, with the rest of the Grimshaw clan, including sons Jason (Ryan Thomas) and Todd (Bruno Langley: Gareth Pierce) showing up a few months later.
And it didn’t take Eileen long to play a part in several big storylines. From her feuds on the cobbles to her marriage to serial criminal mastermind Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre), her time in Weatherfield was not short of drama.
Earlier this year though, it was announced that Sue was leaving the show after 25 years of playing Eileen. The actress later explained she had a desire to pursue other opportunities.
And in June Eileen’s final exit scenes aired after a dramatic few months for the character that saw her get questioned for the death of sister Julie (Katy Cavanagh).
Wanting a new start, Eileen ended up leaving the cobbles, and her boyfriend George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley), for a new life in Thailand with Jason – who returned after nine years.
However, in Monday’s episode (August 2) the soap issued a major update on Eileen.
Having not heard from her for months, George was left shocked when he received a message from Eileen that read: “Sorry I’ve not been in touch, it’s been full on here. Hope you are ok? Love Eyelash x.”
Amid his potential new romance with Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins) though, George ended up deleting the message. And it didn’t take soap viewers long to react to the Eileen update.
One gutted fan wrote on a Corrie Facebook fan page: “Was half hoping George would reply to Eileen and she would come back!” Another chimed in: “Same I’d rather have George with Eileen than Christina!” A third chimed in: “That must be it for him and Eileen then,” along with a broken heart emoji.
Speaking on Loose Women in January, Eileen actress Sue opened up about her decision to leave the soap.
She said; “I have decided after 25 wonderful years that it is time to hang Eileen back up in the prop cupboard. I’ve decided it’s time to leave, they’re keeping the door firmly open for me. It’s just the right time!”
She also later said on This Morning: “I’m leaving now – I’m 61 and this is what my new book is all about. I think we get to an age where society wants us just to shuffle off quietly and I really want to encourage other women that we have so much more to give.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
