Benjamin Sesko was forced off with a knee injury during Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham and will not report for international duty with Portugal
Manchester United forward Benjamin Sesko has been ruled out of international duty after suffering a blow to his knee.
Sesko was brought on in the 58th minute against Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, only to be forced off after just half an hour following medical treatment for his injured knee.
With all substitutions used up, United had to see out the rest of the match a man down.
Assessments at Carrington will continue throughout the week, though insiders hint the injury isn’t likely to be a major worry.
As he exited the stadium, Sesko was visibly limping. During his press conference, Amorim addressed the injury, saying: “We have to check. He had something in his knee, let’s see,” reports the Manchester Evening News.
Pressed on whether it’s a serious injury, Amorim replied: “I have no idea. Because it’s the knee, we never know.”
Sesko joined United in the summer for €76.5million (£66.4m) plus €8.5m (£7.3m) in add-ons.
Having started on the bench for this season’s opening three Premier League fixtures, the 22-year-old’s debut came against Manchester City in September, followed by his maiden goal versus Brentford.
Building on that success, Sesko hit the winner against Sunderland for a 2-0 victory last month, yet found himself benched at Anfield against Liverpool and didn’t score in his next three appearances.
United remain unbeaten in their last five after Matthijs de Ligt’s late equaliser rescued a point against Spurs.
“We have a lot of problems. We are just in the beginning. I know that sometimes the results show to people that we are improving, and we are improving, but we have a lot to do,” Amorim said after the game.
“You can divide the game in the final 10 minutes. Also, when we have to take out Harry Maguire and Casemiro at the same time, then suffer two goals… then losing Ben [Sesko].
“Even before the second goal with the big opportunity, then to overcome everything and manage to score is a good thing. But if you look at the rest of the game, we were comfortable, but I think we should do better.”
