Gavin & Stacey acting legend Larry Lamb has revealed he’s not planning on quitting his sparkling career any time soon as he claimed it would be “fatal”
Legendary actor Larry Lamb has vowed he’ll never pack in acting because giving it up would be “fatal.”
The Gavin & Stacey and EastEnders star, 77, says he’d be bored rigid without work and reckons retirement would send him round the twist.
When the question of quitting came up, his son, and former TV presenter George Lamb, jumped in before his Dad could answer. He laughed: “He can’t stop, he will keel over.”
Larry agreed with a grin before explaining how he keeps himself busy these days. “The problem is, I’ll be sitting around driving myself and everybody else mad, trying to find something to do,” he said. “That’s why I’ve started writing poetry. It occupies me and makes me feel worthwhile.”
Now, Larry’s swapped scripts for scribbles, diving headfirst into the world of poetry. Fans might do a double-take seeing the star putting his thoughts on paper, sharing cheeky, funny, and sometimes surprisingly tender snapshots of life proving there’s more to him than hard-hitting soap roles.
The actor, who once played scheming Archie Mitchell on EastEnders, admitted he’s terrified of turning into a couch potato. “If I don’t have a job of some sort, what use am I? I’m not gonna lie around and just watch the telly. It’s fatal really. I can’t do that. I’ve got to get on and do something.”
Also known as loveable Mick Shipman in Gavin & Stacey, Larry has been a fixture on our screens for the last 44 years, notching up roles in soaps, dramas, comedies, and even the I’m A Celebrity jungle. But slippers, daytime TV, and a pipe? Forget it.
Whether he’s heading down Barry Island, or writing his latest poem, one thing’s certain – he won’t be retiring quietly. Or at all.
