Rhys Farry was well over the limit after ingesting cocaine when Shayna Bowman allowed him to take her kids home from a football tournament — which left one tot unable to walk
A two-year-old boy has been left paralysed after his mum allowed him to be driven home by another man. The incident resulted in a serious crash that caused major injuries to all passengers.
Shayna Bowman, 29, from Wythenshawe in Greater Manchester, gave the green light for her and her kids — two sons and one daughter — to be driven back by Rhys Farry after a football tournament. However, Shayna was fully aware that Farry, 30, as well over the limit after drinking alcohol and taking cocaine.
Investigations found that Farry was overtaking an entire line of traffic when the car he was driving collided with a vehicle going in the opposite direction. This then sent the car off the road, eventually slamming into a tree, leaving Bowman and her family with serious wounds.
After being airlifted to hospital a short time later, it was revealed her two-year-old boy was now left paralysed from the waist down, after he sustained a serious injury to his spinal chord. Doctors have now told Shayna that he will never walk again following the crash, according to the Mirror.
Chester Crown Court heard how the incident took place in the town of Henbury, close to Macclesfield, on April 20. Before the crash, Bowman and three of her kids had opted to watch her fourth child play in a football tournament, in what was supposed to have been a “happy family event”.
Joining the family was Farry, a man that prosecutor Peter Hussey had described as “her supplier of cocaine”, and was a close friend of the mum-of-four. It is believed he had shown up in Audi A3 after having already taken cocaine and alcohol, and had offered her a lift back home.
Hussey went on to say that on the way home, Farry’s behaviour had already aroused suspicion from one of Shayna’s kids, asking him to slow down. However, as the car approached a temporary traffic light, he opted to disobey the rules and overtook the entire line, seconds before the collision took place.
“He went through a red light whilst a Dacia Sandero car was turning right into a side road,” Hussey continued. “As the Dacia was turning, the Audi collided heavily with the rear and offside of that car which was shunted up an embankment.”
Everyone was injured in some way following the crash, with Farry fleeing from the scene, before being apprehended by some of the other motorists. Two of the kids were eventually airlifted to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, with the other two being taken via ambulance.
Police reports found that none of the children were in either a car seat or a booster, which the prosecutor slammed as being something “clearly quite wrong”. Speaking with police, she admitted that she had seen Farry having a drink, knowing he was under the influence when he gave them a lift.
Shayna herself was seriously injured in the crash, sobbing to officers: “It was a massive mistake and I have to live with it for the rest of my life. My kids mean everything to me.”
Farry, based in the Manchester suburb of Chorlton, was jailed for three years at an earlier hearing after he pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drug driving and having no licence or insurance. Shayna would go on to confess to three counts of child neglect before being sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for 20 months.
Shayna wept as she was ordered to carry out 20 days of rehabilitation, and was told she was now required to remain abstinent from alcohol. The injured children are now on the road to recovery, and the house has since been converted so the two-year-old can move around his home freely.
