The last message of missing teen Jay Slater has been revealed, after he wrote out a text that he was unable to send before he passed away while on holiday in Tenerife
A never-before-seen last message written by Jay Slater has been revealed. The teen wrote to a pal saying: “Listen, I’m not going to make it” but did not get chance to send it before his life slipped away.
It only emerged when his family signed into his Snapchat account after police returned his mobile phone to them following the discovery of his body. When the shocked pal received it he immediately messaged Jay’s family bemused by what appeared to be a post from beyond the grave. Fighting back tears Debbie said it gave the friend a “fright”.
“He said, ‘I’ve just got a message that’s just come through from Jay’,’’ the grief-stricken mum said. “It was the last message he sent.
“It said, ‘listen, I’m not going to make it’. It’s kind of like, well he knew, he just wasn’t going to make it.”
An inquest found Jay died accidentally after falling 75ft down a ravine as he walked back to his digs after a night out partying on the holiday isle. His body was found a month after he vanished on his first solo trip abroad.
The coroner found “no evidence of third party involvement” in the death of the apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancs.
But Debbie tells new Channel 4 documentary The Disappearance of Jay Slater how the family’s heartache at his loss had been multiplied by exposure to the wild theories of an army of troll ‘tecs.
Coroner Dr James Adeley said he had ruled out any “criminality” in Jay’s death.
“In a coroner’s court we always consider whether or not there has been criminal activity,” he tells the TV doc.
“All of the police investigations, all of the post mortems, all of the toxicology, all of the witness statements, the digital timelines show there is no evidence of any form of third party involvement, torture or anything of that type.
“We know that Jay left the road and has walked down a ravine. But the terrain is appalling out there. Jay, at this point, would have been up for almost 24 hours.
“He is probably starting to get dehydrated and drugs are involved. This is a tragedy for everybody involved.
“This is simply a young man who didn’t appreciate the circumstances he was getting himself into.
“And in the mountains in those conditions that can be fatal.”
Dad Darren tells the documentary he felt “satisfied” that he had got “closure”.
“Now that you’ve got all the facts together, if he was scared he would have said to one of his mates that he was scared,” he says.
“It was just an accident.”
